|
|
Having received my new 540 at the end of last week I used it for the first time this weekend.
First impressions pretty good (I avoided some major traffic on A406 and A40).
A couple of questions:
1) Google Search - I did a search for a Gastro pub called 'The Brown Dog' in Barnes (SW13). I did the search by name, by pub in area and by restaurant in area and none of them found it.
I repeated the search on my PC using maps.google.co.uk and it found it.
I repeated the search on my mobile (a new HTC Touch Pro - toys for the boys I know) and that found it but marked it as "un-verified".
Are there multiple versions of Google Search? Who decides what is included? Tomtom? Google?
Anyone had any issues like this?
2) Phone book - I imported my phone book. Was searching for a particular number and noticed an out of date entry. How do I delete it from the phonebook on the Tomtom? Is there an option hidden away somewhere?
If I delete it from my mobile's phone book and then re-import will it delete that entry?
3) How does the Petrol discount voucher scheme work? I did not see anything about this in the box. Or was it an introductory offer only? |

1. Interesting! I'd often wondered about this.
A topic from yesterday about the Google *maps* add-on for the TomTom 'Tyre' suggests that there *is* a different database used for the mapping side of Google, because the postcode look-up doesn't work properly when other utilities query Google.
(Link to the topic HERE, and to the author's FAQs HERE)
So maybe something similar goes on with the normal Google search too?
2. Rather then messing about exporting and re-importing, the phonebook on the TomTom is a simple text file.
Just open "contacts.txt' (find it in the "contacts" folder) in Notepad and you can edit it manually to whatever you like.
3. I'm not sure, but I think there was an actual voucher in the box, and I would have thought there would be something about it on the outside of the box too. If there's nothing there, then maybe it was only for a limited time.
No harm in ringing them on 0845 161 0009 to check though! |

With regard to the Google search facility, I too had a failed search when I used it for the first time the other day. It could not find a florist (or flowers or greengrocers) in Addlestone Surrey, althougth it's been there many years. It found one 4kms away which is fairly new. Does it only find paid entries or something? This could influence whether ot not I subscribe, although i've a couple more months to make up my mind.
Also, although the first time I used the fuel price it saved me 2p a litre (on 70 litres), on other occasions it has missed nearby supermarkets. In Dover the other day, the first 15 cheapest fuel prices were all in France!!!!! The nearest was BP at Dover docks which was demolished some years ago, the cheapest in the area was High Wycombe!!! And it totally ignored Sainsburys in Folkstone which is always competative.
With regard to the petrol voucher, my 740 had a cardboard sleeve around the box, with the discount code printed inside it. _________________ Go740L App 9.510 Europe 985.8155

I have theory (completely unproven) that such search facilities are dependant on payment to be included, just like Yellow Pages - your business could well be in the Phone Directory but not in Yellow Pages. I used to think MS Autoroute Express had all the hotels until I tried to find one of the top ones in Wales, without success. When I asked them if they knew they were not included, they replied that they had declined the opportunity of paying to be included. _________________ Dennis

I've just checked and my company is searchable on Google and we've definitely not paid anything. |
