Active 10 - First Day

I have given my new Active 10 a day long test and have to admit to being very impressed with the performance. It is difficult to describe just how much better it is to look at a real OS map on the device.

I set it to Advanced power management and 80% screen brightness with the screen turning off after 15 seconds. I generally prefer north up and updates every 4 seconds is more than enough for walking.

It spent all day with me mostly in the car but with a one hour walk in the local forest at lunchtime. Examining the track I find it didn't lose lock once and it followed the roads I took just about perfectly. Of course the screen was off for most of the day but I set it to be on continuously for the one hour walk.

What has really surprised me is the the AA cells lasted just over 11 hours. This is using 2700mah cheap ebay NiMH AA cells. I had got the impression that the Li-Pol battery was more or less essential but that is certainly not my impression so far. I think I could easily achieve 12 hours use with NiHM cells provided advanced power management is on and I set the screen to 80%brightness and 15 seconds timeout. Even if the batteries did go flat is would be a lot easier to put some alkalines in than trying to find a charger for the LI-Pol halfway up Ben Nevis!

Thanks for that, Dave. Having just ordered an A10 (now on back order at Cotswold, but still a good price with the discount code), I've been viewing your experiences with interest, and am hoping mine isn't one of the 2 in 50! (Why can't they just say 4%?) But it seems that their after sales service is actually rather good if one should need it. Keep telling us how it's going!
