This is just a Hypothetical question.
Ok, I have the latest Western Europe v720 map on my Go 720. Its mine, I downloaded it only a month ago and I paid for it.
Now suppose I was to purchase the v8 map when it becomes available for my device and I install it. What could I do with my fairly new v720 map? Nothing? or could I pass it onto my son who has a Go 520.
As I have already said “its mine”. Could my son legally install it and would it work?

It always used to be that you could activate TomTom maps twice in quick succession (a week or month IIRC) provided that you only used them on one device. Part of the reasoning was that if you had a PPC and it was repaired or replaced under warranty, it sometimes came back with a different device code.

It was always made clear that you didn't have the right to activate it for two devices at the same time.

Of course, now TomTom have changed their activation process, things might have changed in this respect, but if I were you I'd explain your situation to TomTom Customer Services. It's unlikely that they'd think you would want to run old maps alongside new ones on yur 720 so they might arrange a second activation for your son's device, after you've activated the new map on yours.

The long and the short is that they probably aren't obliged to, but you won't find out if you don't ask.

Thanks Tim
When Map v8 does become available for the Go 720 I will follow your advice and contact Tomtom. We will then see what happens. However, if they refuse it really means the v720 map isn’t really mine at all. You could say that I only borrowed it.

Don't forget that the only difference between the 720 and 805 maps are that the 805 ones include IQ Route data and the lane guidance data. Other than those items, they are the same. Is it really worth upgrading for those things?

On a completely unrelated topic, your application in your sig. is shown as 8.0010 but I suspect you mean 8.010. Very Happy

That's right, you don't buy the software, only the licence to use it.

The following should work as I sold on my TTN5 (boxed and complete) and gave the chap my password to enable him to get updates etc. in my name.

Wait until you get your new software and before installing install the older software on your sons device and activate. (It can be done once after 7 days and then no more than twice per year).

Then install the new software on yours and activate that.

Thanks guys for replying. I’m not saying that I will get the latest map when it comes available, it was just a thought that kept niggling away at me. Tim as already pointed out that the actual map differences between the v720 and the new v805 would be very slight and keeping up with map updates can be never-ending and expensive.
However, it pays to know the answers to certain questions and the advice that I have received will remain in my head just in case.

By the way Tim, fancy you noticing the error that I made in my Profile regarding navcore 8.010. You didn’t get where you are today by not noticing things like that.

I will alter it now.

Are the 720 and the 805 maps the same? I never had the latest V7 map so I am just asking, does the A1 have the roundabouts removed on the V7 Maps? Because it does on the V8 map.

Don't forget that when the new maps become available for the 720, they will probably be version 810 or something similar because version 805 are being sold off "cheap" now.

I read somewhere about 10% or roads could be changed but with all the roads in the UK I doubt very much if I use 10% of them, so what's the chance of me coming across one of the changed ones? Having said that I did get caught out on the A38 when the previous year there was a right turn but this time there was a slip road and a bridge over. There was me in the outside lane indicating right. Embarassed

Have you noticed when someone complains about a wrong route it's almost always near where they live?

Roundabouts can come and go but it's not a problem, if my sat nav says turn right and I see a roundabout, I go round it and if it says take the third exit and there's no roundabout I turn right.

Oh silly me! There are those of course who would follow the instructions blindly.

Hi Hoppy
Where are the A1 roundabouts located that you were wondering about?

Calomax From the moment that the Surveyor stands on the side of the road with his Theodolite and the map is completed must take one hell of a time. And after that the map has to be digitised and finally sold to Tomtom taking more time. The expense must be huge.

I mention this for one reason, I doubt that the Surveyors have carried out another Mapping survey since v720. Not enough time. Er! That’s what I think.

Another question for you Tim-
I am thinking about buying a 530 with UK mapping
Would it be possible to have 2 copies of the same map on one unit so that I can make map corrections on one without affecting the other ie roads that I can't take lorries down (low bridges etc).

They probably surveyed it for the next version 15 months ago and for 720/805 18 months ago

Hi Calomax
You may be right. Actually, it would be interesting to read an article about how the mapping is done from start to finish. Maybe one of the team could tag along with the Surveyors. It would make interesting reading and perhaps a few laughs.

I am useing the 8.05 maps. As for differences i honestly can't say that i have noticed many however the IQ routing is neat, it seems with the 720 maps my regular route home started going a different way but with the 8.05 it is back to normal.
The lane guidance is cool, the graphics for the motorway exits are superb.
