Hi, I'm after any help anyone can suggest. I have a TT720T and it was left unused for a couple of months. Now when it is switched on it shows a picture of the tomtom with green backdrop and in the bottom right corner a small hard drive picture - then after a while a white cross in a red circle is shown - then after a little while longer this cross starts to flash. I cant do anything except turn it off. When plugged into the PC it is only recognised as two removable disks - when these disks are clicked the pc says please insert media. I think it's dead and I'll have to buy an upgrade Very Happy . but I would still like to get this working again as its only 13 months old.

Welcome to the forum, for a start remove the SD card and give the reset switch a little poke with a paperclip or similar, when you switch it on what does it do? - if it is still the same we should be able to resolve the issue though - Mike

Hi, Thanks for your quick reply!
I have tried a normal reset with a paperclip and also a 'hard' reset by switching it on with the reset button pressed. The normal reset results in the same problem. The hard reset gives me a lot of text on the screen about the unit then eventually results in the same problem.

Hi, just to add that have tries reset without memory card in and it does the same but it is not a real memory card and only appears to be a dummy card.

Connect the unit to the PC and shut down TomTom Home on the PC if it starts up.
Use Windows Explorer to make a full copy of all the files and folders on the device, simply select them all in one go and copy them to a folder on the PC.
With the back up done open Windows Explorer and double click the drive letter associated with your TomTom. You will see a lot of folders and some loose files, select all the loose files and press delete.

DO NOT TOUCH ANY FOLDERS OR FILES WITHIN FOLDERS.

Connect the unit to the PC and start the TomTom Home software, use this to install the latest application to the device and it should start up and work - Mike

In My Computer, when TT is plugged in I get two new drives which are labelled as 'Removable Disk' when I click on them to look for files they both say the same thing 'Please insert a disk into Removable Disk' which means I can neither read or writeto these drives. (I get the same on two different computers regardless if TTHome is running or not).

Thats not the answer I wanted to hear as it looks like the memory on the device is shot, all is not lost though.

1/ Do you have a backup of the device from prior to the unit crashing? If so install this on to an SD card of at least 2GB capacity, insert the card into the TomTom and start up the unit, it will run quite happily from the SD or SDHC memory card - a 2GBcard can be purchased for £2 or £3 these days.

2/ No back up, well we can still rebuild the data needed to go on the card, but it will take longer and involves you purchasing a new map from TomTom to go on the unit - still cheaper than scrapping the device, £39:99 for UK & ROI or £49:99 for Western Europe are the current prices.

If you want to go ahead with option 2 let me know and I will sort out a set of instructions and download links - Mike

Hi, Option 2 sounds good, but is there a way of testing it before spending on the new maps? eg install operating system on card on to check that it can read the card ok?

Yes, this is exactly what I was going to ask you to check:

The Navcore 8,010 software is still available from the servers at TomTom:

For Go x20 devices click Here

For Go x30 devices click Here

To install this to your device I use WinRar which you can download from Here Switch the TomTom on and connect it to your PC, if TomTom Home starts up exit the application as Home isn't needed for this.

Double click the file :

navcore_8.010.9369.gox20 for Gox20
navcore_8.010.9369.gox30 for Gox30

Depending upon which one you downloaded and winrar will fire up, use the mouse to select all files and folders then click "Extract To"



Locate the drive letter associated with your SD Card within the TomTom and click it, make sure the Overwrite mode is selected to "Ask before overwrite", then press "OK"



Sit back and watch the progress bar, with a good USB2 connection a Navcore 8,010 installation will take around 2 minutes.



When its finished the update use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from the Task Tray and remove the lead from the device.

Let the device boot up and assuming it is working it should report NO Maps Found, if this works we can progress on to downloading and installing the postcode files, LoquendoTTS voices before you need to purchase the map - Mike

I have done as directed onto a spare camera SD card and it has booted and reported no maps!

For the LoquendoTTS files:

Download the LoquendoTTS version 7 voice of your choice:

American Dave Voice

American Susan Voice

British Kate Voice

British Simon Voice

Install the LoquendoTTS Voice you downloaded using WinRar, extract the files directly to the folder named "LoquendoTTS" which is located on your SD Card.

For postcodes you will have to visit Oldboy's web site where you will find the necessary download, click Here extract the download to the root of the SD card.

You could at this point get the map you want by using the TomTom Home software on your PC, connect the device to the PC, start up home and update the software on the unit to the latest release (8,300) do this BEFORE you purchase any map - Mike

You have probably got it sorted now with the advice you have received but below is a copy of a post which is a reply from tomtom it may be off help


The error you got meant that the Application file (that runs the map and menus) got corrupted, it is very easy to resolve the issue (see details below). The most common cause for this happening is either how you are disconnecting from PC, when disconnecting in TomTom Home always click on 'Device' and then 'Disconnect Device' and it will tell you when it is safe to unplug the device. It may have also been that when you updated your device the application got corrupted.
This solution can be used in the following situations:

• The device hangs in the start screen (splash screen)
• An SD-card with a red cross is displayed on the screen
• A picture with a red dot and white cross is displayed
• The device can’t be turned off

If you haven't already done so, please download and Install TomTom Home
If you don’t have a full backup of your TomTom yet we advise you to make one before continuing with the steps in this email. You can make a backup by following the steps below:( Edit * please refer to GerryC post which is below to back up in windows rather than home*)
1. Reset your TomTom device
and connect it to your computer.
2. Click on Backup and Restore Backup' in TomTom Home 2.0
3. Enter a name for the backup and click [OK]
• IMPORTANT: When the software is asking to delete parts from the backup click [NO]
After the backup is made you delete the files from the root directory of the TomTom. Follow the steps below to do this:
1. Reset your TomTom device
and connect it to your computer.
2. Open My Computer in Windows, or Finder in Macintosh from your desktop and turn on your TomTom device.
3. On your screen a new removable disk appears, this is your TomTom device, click on the disk to open it.
4. You will see a list of folders and a list of loose files
5. Delete all of the loose files. IMPORTANT: The folders with their content must NOT be deleted.
5. Close the window when all files are deleted by clicking on the [x].

Next we will reinstall the application via TomTom HOME.

1. Start TomTom HOME on your computer
TomTom Home should automatically check for updates and prompt you to install them, if not
2. Click on 'Update my device'. If you get the message 'No Items Available', or there is not an application to download, click on 'Add Maps, Traffic, Voices etc Items on my computer', select the application and click on 'Add'.
3. Select the Application update.
4. Click on 'Device Disconnect Device' then turn off your device when it is done installing and disconnect it from your computer.
5. On a PC, in the System Tray by the computer clock, click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon and disconnect the TomTom also in this way.

When switching on the device it should boot as normal again.

Please note I did not try this so if anybody uses this it is at there own risk but it may point somebody in the right direction
I hope Tomtom has given me the correct information
