I have just got one of these as a pressie!

It has NT Europe 2009 maps so I assume latest one!
How do I access Europe part of maps though? Are they preinstalled on unit and just invisible as I am in Uk or do I have to unlock/register them in some way to release them? The SD card slot is empty so I assume all?? of the maps are preinstalled on the unit ??

Is it recommended that I back up maps? If so, what is the recommended method.

Also I can't seem to register unit via mygarmin on garmin.com etc - I have tried my original username and password and an alternative username and password (as I registered again in frustration) but can't get either of them recognised - tried uppercase/lowercase etc and it just says "you are not logged in! - advice appreciated

Yes, that's the latest maps.

If you mean how do you program a route to another country after you do Where TO? you should have an option to change the Country. Then proceed as normal. You don't need to unlock anything.

Can you not zoom out until you see Europe and then zoom in on, say, France?

It's recommended you back up all the files. Plug the unit into your PC and copy and paste all the files to a folder on your PC, then burn that to DVD. Be carefully not to delete any files from the Nuvi or CUT the files. You must COPY. Be aware this can take some time - up to an hour. Even if it looks like it's frozen leave it. The map files are huge.

All i can suggest here is to try resetting your password or contacting Garmin.

Once you have done a backup, make sure the unit is up to date with WebUpdater
