I am looking to update my Western Europe map on my 710, not done one since buying but have 30% off so thought why not. The new map is just over 1.5 GB and the message says make sure you have enough space on you card. I have a 2 GB card with 980 MB free space, with the old maps taking up 921 MB. Should I delete the old maps or will the download overwrite the old ones? Sorry if this is a silly question.

Cheers

Just my opinion.....

First of all, not a silly question at all...........

I would backup your existing map using Explorer to a folder on your hard drive and then after purchasing the new map, let TT dl and install. Home is supposed to detect if there is enough room and remove the existing map and replace with a new one BUT I know of sittuations where Home removes the old map and THEN notifies the user there is not enough room to install the new one.

Well, the old one is gone and yes, the new one is already supposed to be dl in a compressed form on your computer (so that you can remove other 'stuff' from the unit (or the dl map') to allow for the new map to fit).

I'm just saying.....better safe than sorry, eh?

I have a 710 and upgraded the maps quite some time ago now. v645.xxxx something or other.

I copied the entire contents from the SD card onto my PC using windows - not TT HOME.
Then downloaded the new maps. I believe they do overwrite your old map rather than just update the bits that need doing.
Make sure you download the latest software update for the 710 before buying the maps.
Without looking, I think it is 7.9 - with numbers in brackets afterwards.
That way you get the newest maps for the best software the 710 can run.

Thanks for the tips, do you know if I can save the maps on my PC first rather than straight on the device.

Cheers

Not sure, but I would say no. Reason being that the maps are locked to the device, so assume they need to load onto that 1st.

I have a couple of maps saved for my 710, on the PC.

May get a better answer from someone else.

If you buy a new map using TT website I think you can (maybe even have to) but you have to use Home to download, so presumably it will be locked to whichever pnd you registered with TT and you have to use Home to install on your device.

A downloaded map is ALWAYS saved to the PC first, and then uploaded to the TomTom.
