Is it possible to delete the older map on my Nuvi 310. It must be slowing things down, a whole map in memory that I don't use.

What 'older map'?

If you have upgraded the mapping your new map it will replace the original. That's why there is an update version and a full install version. AFAIK the full version will NOT update the unit but you could create another map (different file name). I don't see why you would do this though - it's more expensive.

I don't know what happens if you delete the original map - perhaps the unit will simply use the additional map - but I would take a full backup before you try this (at your own risk etc...)

I was assuming the old map was a dfferent thing as when in the about maps screen you can tick/untick either. If both are ticked, when you search for a destination, it will appear twice and the camera warning tones go mental as you approach a gatso!!!

when the Nuvi was hooked up to the pc there were two very large files with similar but not quiet the same names (don't have the nuvi with me at the moment) wich I assumed were the two different maps.

Maybe I should copy the files and then delete one and see what happens.

It sounds like you have added the new maps instead of updating the existing maps. I did this with the 2008 maps on a Nuvi 300 and was also able to tick both sets in the about maps screen.

I deleted the new map and reloaded the CD and was careful to choose the update option. This then overwrote the existing maps and only the latest map displayed on the about maps screen.
