My son has a 520, and has just bought the France map for a trip on Friday.

He installed it onto a 4GB card, but when he goes to Switch Map it only shows the UK&RoI map which is on the device itself. However, the France map is available when he uses Operate My Go in Home.

Any ideas?

I have heard that if you press the pin reset with the card in and also press the reset with the card out, put the card back in and reboot, both will be reachable. Doesn't hurt to try.

Thanks for the suggestion, David. He tried it, but no joy!

As we know, on those models it SHOULD work with both the SD card and the internal memory together.
But if it just refuses to, there is no solution in sight and he needs it by Friday, is it worth putting the operating system files onto the SD card and seeing if it sees the France map when you boot from the card?

Grasping at straws here, Anita .........

Perhaps a removal of the application from the unit and a re-installation??

(backing up the unit using Explorer first before removal)

Or really adventurous ...........

What happens if both map folders are copied to the pc, then remove both folders from the unit ans sd card using Explorer and then switching locations when copying back the map folders ... the one on the sd card being put on the unit and vice-versa?

Thanks for your help, guys.

Andy, would you have to remove the operating system from internal memory to make it boot from the card?

I've emailed your suggestions to him, along with a few of my own, the simplest of which was that I lend him my 720, but as it would mean a 200 mile round trip for me I doubt if he'll accept that one!

Also suggested putting both maps on the card and none in memory, and seeing if the device finds either of them.

Or if all else fails remove the UK map from the device and install the France map - if there's room. If it then works, put both maps on his laptop (assuming he's taking it) and change them mid-channel.

I'll let you know if he manages to sort out the problem.

Problem solved. Very Happy

I suggested he swap the card for the one in his camera (a decent, fast card that I bought him!), and the maps show up fine using that.

Apparently he was using a cheap Transcend card he'd bought from Amazon. It just shows what good advice you get on this forum, about always using good quality, fast cards.

It's so nice when an OAP mum knows something her son, who works in IT and has given her so much advice on computer problems in the past, doesn't! Supreme Angel

Smile Priceless, I hope I can do the same when my daughter grows up. She's already far too handy with computers at 11yrs old and I've given up trying to beat her on the games consoles. Now when I'm particularly stuck in a game I get her to help me!

Cool... glad you got it sorted in time Smile

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly confident that on boot up, it looks at the SD card first and if it sees an operating system there it uses that one. If it doesn't find one it moves onto the internal memory and looks there.

A bit like setting the boot order on a PC. You can have it to look at the C: drive first or you can set it to look for a disk in the CD/DVD drive first.

Correct, it defaults to booting from the memory card if that has an OS on it.

Thanks, Andy and Darren. I must try to remember that!

And thanks for the suggestion, Andy.

As I gave him the card at Christmas, at the same time I gave him the 520, I assumed that was the card he was using. Shows you should ask, never make assumptions, and always try the simplest things first!

But it has given me a nice warm glow! Cool
