I've just upgraded to the above from Go700 and am totally confused.

It's supposed to be the 'traffic' version, yet despite the cd manual showing traffic preferences button on first page of main menu, on mine you have to click through to page 3. Then it is totally disabled. However, I did eventually find it came alive when the RDS-TMC traffic receiver was plugged in.

All very badly explained.

THEN, on none of the menus anywhere is there the compass preference button, having tapped my way through the 8 'preference changes' pages many times. I have - under the status bar options - chosen to have the compass displayed.

Is this faulty software, or what?

Any help gratefully received.

Tim

It depends how you define "faulty". Confused It's the way it is now. The compass has been something to attract a lot of grumble from some people, but I've never understood that as I've never used the compass, so I don't know what I'm missing.

TomTom Manuals are not exactly famous for their content - for example, mine says I can only listen to hands free phone via my FM radio and it also says on a different page that I can only listen to hands free phone via the internal speaker on the device. It often says you can do xxxx, but doesn't tell you how to!

Hmmmm - thanks for your input DennisN. Guess it's like all microchip things these days: we have to put up with them never quite working right.

On my old Go700, I always used the compass (and never had any problems) as I just like to be reassured I'm generally heading in the right direction!

In this thread about the changes to the compass on 18 July

Just got a reply from TT after posting my request on their site. Seems they've had loads of people complain and will endeavour to change in a future upgrade. See reply below:-

"Many people feel the same way that you do about this change. I will make sure to pass along the message to our experts, to make sure that we get this changed. I estimate that before the end of the year, you will see this feature come back again."

Thanks Anita. I've also just noted a similar thread in the Expansys gps forum where it's said:

V7, Pref 3 of 8 has the compass icon.

V8, Pref 3 of 8 has the hide lane images.

V8, in the Status Bar options you have a compass box to ckeck if you require this downgraded version of the compass.

The compass pref icon is replaced with `Hide lane` on upgrading to V8 maps.

I will have to try that.
