I connected my tom tom one V3 to my computer today and tried to update it with the mapshares. It would not do it and i had a error message "xml tag name mismatch (expected hv-raw). I tried again and had the same.
i thought i would do a restore but that failed because it said i had disconnected the device before the update was installed. (even though it was not).

Now i cannot do any type of update or even get tomtom home to work with the unit.

I have tried to uninstall/re-install of tomtom home with no avail and also doing a reset by holding the button for 15 secs but that does not work.

When i do a reset what is supposed to happen as afterwards my personalized front screen and my home location has not changed, when i thought it would go back to factory settings.

Hopefully this was explained that you can all understand and show some light on this problem for me

Does the device boot up and work normally? or does it hang at the boot screen.
A reset will only clear the device memory and will not cause any changes to personal settings or splash screens, using the reset to factory defaults from the menu scren will wipe out some data such as Home location and any POI warnings, but customised things like splash screens are files stored on te device and will only ever be removed by re-installation of a day one back up. - Mike

Is it connecting to the PC OK, when you connect go to Windows Explorer and can you see the TomTom device as a seperate drive letter, if you click this it will open to reveal folders and files etc.
This simple test will establish if the fault is with TomTom Home or possibly the PC/ USB cable - Mike

ok

I do see the tom tom in "my computer" as a seperate drive and can view all the files in it.

When i do connect the tomtom windows asks me if i want to scan and fix or just open the device without fixing.

I allways try to just open it as i did try to scan and fix but it would not as the device was in use.

As i said in my first post i have uninstalled and re-installed tomtom home.

Cheers

So you have the additional problem of Microsoft Vista then if it wants to scan the device each time? Just answer No to this each and every time and thank Bill for the extra mouse clicks.

Have you got a back up created using Windows Explorer rather than TTHome - If so the removal of the TT Home software and associated files on the PC is possible, if not copy the entire TomTom drive using Windows Explorer to a safe known location on your PC - Mike

If you have a Full Backup, it is much better to do a Reformat.

Avoid Scan and Repair like the plague.

Linux, the TomTom Operating System, uses Filenames that Windows thinks are Lost File Clusters, but which are important files to Linux.

I've done all that now and i find that the backup i did originally is corrupt!!
When i go to restore i get corrupt messages on the files and the folders.

I feel that i now have to send it back to tomtom via the shop or is there another solution i can do to get it restored.

I did try to copy and paste all the files via explorer but that would not make the unit work either.

Which Files are giving you corrupt messages?

If you follow the instructions in This Post, you should be able to get software files downloaded on to the Device.

Just make sure that your Map Folder, and it's contents, are safe.

I have tried to do a format through windows but it would not complete,so i decided to do it in dos and had this error message

"The type of the file system is Raw.
The new file system is FAT.
Verifying 490M
1003520 bad sectors were encounted during the format. These sectors cannot be guaranteed to have been cleaned.
Invalid media or Track 0 - Disc unusable"

I suppose that is the reason i cannot delete all the files folders when i could read the tomtom.

I will do a chkdsk in dos and see if it can be repaired through there and then format it again and follow the other post.

Cheers for now[/img]

If you have a Card Reader try this -
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html

Edit - It's just been pointed out to me that you may have a Third Edition. The clue is in the 490 MB. Embarassed So ignore the first paragraph.

Did you do a Full Reformat, or a Quick Format? Full is better.
