Evening all,

Ive been a long time tom tom user but have just ordered a Mini Copper S Works which has sat nav,

I still need a camera and maybe laser detector,

Should I look at the road Angel or is there something better out there ? I would prefer it hard wired and out of site so I thought maybe the RA with the number plate laser thing,

any thoughts please ?

Jules

Why not use the TomTom with the database from here?

and maybe laser detector

I would have thought that by the time the detector has sensed the laser, it would be too late????

Forget laser, the detectors rarely do anything and will be outlawed later this year anyway when the Road Safety Bill comes into force.

As for a safety camera alert system, what's your budget and what do you have in the way of GP already?

Very soon the laser detectors and Radar receivers will be made illegal by the "nanny state" so I would save some money if I were you, a GPS camera warning system using the database from this site will warn you of fixed locations and mobile sites where potentialy the Police/ Local Camera "partnership" are employed (GPS based camera warners are not going to be made illegal in the UK under the current law changes)

As for hardware it depends upon your budget, there are nav units costing from a little over £100 that will give both navigation and camera warnings, to the high end units costing £400+

More simple speed camera warning systems using GPS and the database from this site can even be employed on some mobile phones and cost under £10 for the software, there is a multitude of options.

What do you actually want from the device:

Speed camera Warnings
Door to Door navigation
Uk or Europe map coverage
USA map coverage
Hands free for the mobile phone
Traffic information
MP3 music player

the list could go on, but I include the above as mental stim, answer the questions and you might be surprised at what hardware will meet your needs - Mike

Thanks everybody,

Ok working on the laser being outlawed tois year I guess I am looking for a camera warning system.

I already have sat nav built in,

So I need a small reliable camera warning that can maybe be tucked out teh way, probably needs an external Ariel,

Cheers jules

Why not do as suggested above, put the Pocket GPS World Speed Camera database on the TomTom along with spoken alerts and large icons, this will be as good (if not better) than a stand-alone system - Mike

I really hated the road angel due to it warning of cameras but not being able to see where they were on a map, like on my tomtom

also their laser warning isnt a touch on the pocketgps one

I think he was comparing the RoadAngel's laser warning system with the PGPSW GPS based camera location database. Quite understandable given that detector based units can't detect all camera types.
