It's quite embarrassing for me to have to ask this so apologies in advance! I picked up a 920T last night and am unsure which map I set it to for the UK. I've got the option of GUAM/Western & Central Europe & North America.

I've chosen Western & Central Europe, but when connected to TomTom Home it also tells me there are maps for Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland at a further cost. Isn't that what I need or is it covered in the Western & Central Europe option?

Ignore what Home is saying the map you have on the device is fine, the Western Europe map contains all the UK at street level definition so you will be fine using that, although you should check the version installed to the device, tap the sat strength meter followed by the version box and it will tell you the map version, something like v710 or v715 - what number / version have you got installed - Mike

In that case, you should have a "Latest Map Guarantee" (maybe on a card in the box?) which entitles you to a free update to v715 for AT LEAST one of your maps.

There are arguments raging over whether you should be entitled to updates to ALL of them, TT have given them to some people, but refused them to others, saying that the wording only says "one update" (which could be argued to mean only one VERSION update).

You use "Home" to check whether you are entitled to the update, and when that fails (as it usually seems to!) you have to ring them up and ask....

Right ok, how often do the maps get updated? I've got 30 days to upgrade to the latest version from when I first use it, but obviously I can only upgrade it once. Is it worth waiting a few weeks to see if they're updated again?

I doubt it.
v7.15 Western Europe, Western and Central Europe, and UK and Ireland maps were only released around Feb. 5th 2008

The previous version (v710) came out in November 2007 and the one before that (v705) in August 2007 I believe.

I'm just wondering, If I get a TomTom with western and central europe, Does that mean that every time I search for a street etc it will search the whole of europe?
Is there any way to say I'm only interested in UK streets for now. (not planning to go into europe every day)
And then when I do go to europe, enable the rest of the map?

I'd like the europe version, but I don't want it to make it harder to use every day in the UK.

Thanks
J

If you use Navigate to ...., or Find in Browse Map, the Search is Country Specific. The option to change it comes within the Find Menu.

The entire Map is 'Enabled' but the Search criteria remains specific.

If you search for a location in Germany, it will Navigate you from your present location, wherever it is within the scope of the Map, to that point.

On present software, if you ask it to navigate to an address, the first thing it asks for is the city. On the page where you enter the city name, there is a little country flag on the right of the screen, which (for me) stays on the UK unless I tap it, so searches are restricted to the UK.
If I tap the flag, I can select another country for it to search in.

A picture would be worth a thousand words, but I haven't found one yet!

Edit: Found one! (Near enough, this is on the postcode entry page, but it looks the same)

Which then takes you to this screen.
