i have owned three tomtom sat navs the first being a go300 which had the best windscreen mount in my view, but no mains charger, then i had a go 510 which had a rubbish windscreen mount and now i have a go 520 which is ok but the dash mount is still a lot to be desired and to make things worse a padded bag isnt included, but the home docking/charging unit is brilliant , why cant they make these units have all the same equipment in the package ,considering the cost of these units.

Because cost is ALL important and it's the headline grabbing price that attracts buyers. Besides not everyone wants/needs a home charger or carry case. If they sell without, those that want them can buy them as accessories if they need them.

I don't need or want a carry case. The new x20's don't need a mains charger as they will charge from a PC. I agree the mount is lacking but suspect they chose this route as we're all supposed to remove our units when the car is unoccupied. Complex mounts with power and other connections built-in make this more difficult.

I guess its down to a number of factors.

Cost - it's a competitive market - price is a major buying factor esp at the lower end.

Manufacturing - they will sub-contract the manufacturing (and detailed product design?) for each model to reduce cost, so peripherals like power, mounts etc will tend to be different.

At lease things like USB power connectors have standardised some aspects
