Are there any handheld GPS units that can be used for hiking and also used in the car with UK streetmaps and able to take poi's for the speedcam database?

Is this asking too much?

You can use a PDA based mobile phone for this type of work, you will require some Topo maps from someone like Memory Map for the Walking side of things, and I would seriously recommend an Otter Box to house it when walking to prevent damage from the elements and if you drop it.

For in car use you can install quite a number of different applications, some provide navigation and speed camera warnings, or you can get a more simple package to just offer speed camera warnings with no navigation.

Have a look at the HTC Artemis or the newer (as yet to be released) HTC Touch Cruise these phones have the GPS built in and work very well - I have been using my Artemis for the last 14 months as a day to day phone with all the other features you want available via software.

If you don't want the PDA route then look at the Garmin devices, they can also perform both on/ off road usage and they are very good at it, I simply prefer the OS style maps that Memory Map can provide on a PDA - Mike

Thanks, I don't want to go the pda route so I will look at the Garmin devices. Any particular model? The 60csx looks like a possibility.

You may want to wait a short while and see what new units GARMIN come out with for UK / Europe. If you go to their US website then you will find the new Colorado range (3xx and 4xx) being listed for US only at present. One of these may be suitable. Not cheap though. I would expect a version in UK for European road mapping if they have any sense.

Yes, I saw that it looks worth waiting for. I am not in a hurry so I will see what price it comes out at.
