Newbee needs help

Im a very newbee, but I am looking for a hand held GPS for use in Oman (Arabian gulf) and in France. I will be using it for a bit of desert navigation in Oman in the car and in France for walking trips. Have seen one called Garman geko, would this fit the bill or has anybody better suggestion. Not looking to spend a fortune maybe up to 150 pounds. Thanks in anticipation for any help.
