How long should the battery life be when the unit not in use ?
If the battery discharges completely will I lose anything ?

I'm not too sure what the shelf life is, probably 2 or 3 weeks.

You won't lose anything because the data is stored on the SD Card.

If the battery had gone totally flat, after a re-charge it will read the SD Card on Boot Up when you switch on.

Just in case others read this, it isn't the case with internal memory that could be lost if the battery discharges. That's what happens with my PDA. Mad

jc50, if you know your unit won't be used for weeks, then I'd suggest you keep a Windows backup just in case.

There's also a sequence I can't recall (somebody help please) that properly powers down the device, stopping the background drain. On start-up it then does a 'cold boot'.

I really don't understand why the 'standby' drain on these devices is so high. It's not as if it has to be doing anything useful (except perhaps keeping the clock going)

PDA's loose everything when the battery is flat, because everything is stored in RAM, and you need power for the RAM. Doesn't the TomTom have a hard drive, the ones without an SD card, so you won't loose anything?
