getting PocketPC with intergrated GPS-whats best GPS s/ware

OK Ive just ordered a Asus MyPal A696, its a PocketPC with an intergrated GPS sirf III in

I used to have a car that had intergrated Sat-Nav in, I also used to use my iPaq 2210, with a Bluetooth reciever, and Tom Tom, it still works well, but I decided I wanted a all-in-one unit for ease.

I found that the Asus A696 comes with a car kit-charger and mount, but no GPS software -seems daft, but its a great price for the deal.

So my question is what GPS software shall I get, it runs Windows Mobile 6, with a 3.5" colour QVGA screen (320X240),and an SDIO slot

I want to be able to download camera database and use it with warnings for the cameras, and probably the ability to add extra POIs, for stuff that I would use, eg Brewster bears for the kiddies when we eat out when we're away.

Any help (and places to get pls) would be gratefull.

Probably lots of people at work!

Not sure what apps are supported on WM6 - I don't believe TTN6 is - not that it would stop it from working apparently.

I have no direct experience with other PND s/w for windows devices.

However - just read a bit more from the link and it states that the A696 runs on WM5 - so at least TTN6 should work - but whether it's been tested to check support for the internal GPS is another matter. I suggest you do a trawl of the usual suspects.

TomTom is the 'natural' choice - you are already familiar with a version of it. I have use IGo via a friend- but could not get on with the overly fussy screens - they seem to do everything to obscure the all important map.

The device is WM 6, theres an upgrade if the device doesnt come with it off the Asus website, even though descrption shows WM5.

Surely if TT works on WM5 it will on WM6 wont it?

Whats PND software pls?

I was hoping it would come with Destinator as reported, but it doesnt,as I was going to choose this and have a go. whats the "league table" of s/ware for Windows Mobile devices? there seems to be loads, routee 66, destinator, Tom Tom, AA, Navigon etc.

So you dont think the internal GPS will work with the internal GPS, ah no, thats a problem if it doesnt, how will I find which s/w does before buying?

got it today, my Asus MyPal A696, it comes pre-loaded with WM6 on.

I contacted Clove where I bought it who replied and said that Tom Tom 6 would work with it, so I presume it will work with the internal GPS.

So what other products do you recommend please, Route 66, Destinator, Copilot, or is Tom TOm the best?

Don't presume anything about the internal GPS - the one on the Nokia N95 can't be used by most apps.

As for a list of apps - it's going to be pretty long but to start you off...

I have TT6 on my AXIM X51v and Nokia N80 - uswed to be main car nav system but ought GARMIN 660. Useful to have the TT6 on the phone for hols though.

I've seen iGo on a PDA - but wasn't all that inpressed - too much screen taken up with non-essential information. All you really need displayed is the map and pop-ups for POIs / TMC warnings - you really aren't meant to be "using" the device whilst driving.

I also run Pocket Anquet for 1:50k OSGB maps and MemoryMap 5 for 1:25K OSGB maps

I have OziExplorer for producing and using custom maps on my PC/PDA

All these look really good on my AXIM as it has 640*480 screen - very clear detail shown.

Look for other apps by searching shareware sites should reveal dozens.

It really does depend on what you want out of the system and how you like the user interface.

The drawback with the TomTom software is the fact that WM6 devices are not supported so if you do encounter a problem that cannot be fixed via the support and advice offered on the forum you will be in trouble as TomTom can quite easily refuse to help - there have been cases of this in the past on other devices.
Have a look at what Route 66 offers as their web site demands an OS 2003 or higher so at least you have comeback on the manufacturer if there is a problem, it is quite good in use and does support speed camera warning with spoken alerts, whilst the menu is not quite as intuative as the TomTom product it comes a very close second in my opinion and I still use it from time to time, you will find a review of Route 66 Here Please note full postcode support has been added since I wrote that - Mike

personally I like iGO it does take a little getting used to I will admit but does give good route and should work with that device however IGO 2008is just around the corner I believe.

copilot can be a bit comlicated in use though a newer version is due hopefully soon

mapfactor pocket navigator7
is a no frills applicaton and should work fine with your device cameras supported from this site

if your happey with tomtom thestick with it I have it running on an xda exec with wm6 and it should befine

thanks for the comments.

I just wanted to see what other people thought, as the obvious chice is Tom Tom, but is this just because its the market leader, or is it the best? (sometimes they are not the same thing!)

I have been informed Tom Tom will work no problem with my Asus A696, to be honest there is not to much change on the OS from WM5 to WM6, not like W2003 for exapmle, so anything that works on WM5 should do on WM6.

SO Route 66 then? or Igo? or wait for these new versions to come out?

I tried Destinator on a friends briefly, seemed ok but not sure
