Can anyone please tell me if there's a way that i can get the website to remember my preferences so that when i go on to download POIs i don't have to keep selecting the categories?

Not with the way the POIs are handled at the moment.
It would need something along the lines of a Cookie to be able to handle that, and I have no idea how easy that would be in this context.

it's not possible as the 'tree' is created dynamically and the values will differ each time. eg if you had a cookie that stored group '13' as a 'selected' option then next time a few new categories could have been added and group '13' would now be '15' or '16' or '57'...
