Navman F20 bootloader problem

Can anyone help or advise ?

After downloading the F-Series software update v2 from the Navman site, and installing I am now left with the following information on my F20 screen.
'Secondary Bootloader Invalid
Navman F20 (32MB RAM)
Primary Bootloader 4.10.0002
Built on Jul 20 2006 at 13.09.00
Insert a SD into slot....
Loading bootloader from SD card'

Obviously at this point as the SD card is just the original SD card with maps etc on it - pressing the menu button - I get

'SD card initialised
Error getting bootloader file size'

I cannot get rid of this information even if I try a hard reset from underneath the F20

Has anyone got any ideas or come across this before.
Any advise appreciated

Hi acid-erosion. Welcome to the forum.

It has failed to install the sofware properly. Did you make a backup before the update, as you could reinstall this and retry the update.

I am not very clear on the F20 Desktop program, but is there an option to 'update softwere to f20' or something like that, as it should be able to re initialise the software on to the device. I'm sorry I can't be clearer as the online manuals for the F20 are a bit lame.

From my knowledge of embedded systems, it is likely Navman use what they call a primary and secondary boot loader. The primary is very simple and basic - it never needs changeing so your hardware will always be able to run. All it does is install and run the secondary - for want of a better description the OS.

If a software update is required of the OS, and that fails, the system cannot start, so if you did not have the primary, your device becomes a expensive paper weight. In this case, the very basic primary bootloader can (and has) takes over and trys to find and install a new OS.

Call navman Tech support. I suspect the primary loader only has enough functionality to install a new OS from an SD card. They should be able to send you a file or two to put onto an SD to get you up and running.

1. Get yourself a new SD card – do not use Navman map card!!!
2. Create “Navman” directory on the card
3. Create “System” directory within “Navman” directory
4. Assuming you haven’t deleted F20 update you downloaded, use Windows Search facility (if you use something other than Windows I’m sure you’ll know what to do instead) to find where this file is located on your hard drive: “iCN410_secondary_bootldr_4_10_1014.bin”
5. Make yourself a working copy of “iCN410_secondary_bootldr_4_10_1014.bin” somewhere safe, e.g. in “C:\Temp”
6. Rename your working copy of “iCN410_secondary_bootldr_4_10_1014.bin” to “bootldr.bin”
7. Copy “bootldr.bin” into “\Navman\System” you created on your SD card in steps 2 and 3
8. Start your F20 and when it displays SD card message put your new SD card with “bootldr.bin” into F20
9. Press “Menu” button
10. Connect F20 to your PC
11. Run F20 Service Pack again
12. If you did everything right and there was no damage to data on internal memory your F20 should be restored.

Thankfully TheM pulled it out of the bag, absolutely fantastic and worked a treat - my F20 is now back up and running, so a massive thank you for that.

The update though keeps failing so maybe I wont bother with that at the moment.
