Hi all,

I am going on a round the world trip early next year and am looking for a gps logger to track my whereabouts for the entire journey. I plan to use this track information for geotagging all the photos I take as I go and generally just seeing a path of everywhere that I've been. I will be travelling for about 3 months.

Does anyone have any recommendation of a GPS data logger that can meet the following requirements:

1. Long battery life + standard changeable batteries (i.e. AAA etc)
- I want to record 24/7 for 3 months. So it has to have the ability to quickly change batteries to keep it going rather than have it die halfway through the day with no way to recharge it.

2. USB download capability.
- I plan on stopping at internet cafe's etc to upload track information and photos along the way. Hence I won't have a bluetooth enabled device to download the data from it.

3. External Storage.
- SD card or similar storage capabilities so I can buy a very large memory card to record possibly weeks of track information at a time.

I don't need it for navigation so it doesn't need maps or waypoints or any other fancy features... it just needs to be able to log lots of data points for a long time and let me download them via USB.

If anyone has any recommendations or places to look that would be great.

thanks,

have a look at this - meets most criteria but probably would need external battery back to do what you want.

Use an external battery box to power it so that you put normal throw away batteries in the box to charge the device, or if it somewhere warm you are going look at one of These - they work by charging their own internal battery from the solar panels, you then transfer the charge into your portable device when convenient - they even work in the UK - Mike

If geotagging your photos is all you want a GPS logger for, you might like to consider a digital camera with built in GPS for geotagging.

The disadvantages of it is the cost, and the phot quality may not be in the 800-1000MP class, assuming you will use a compact. Of course you can get an expensive Nikon for good quality photos but it is more cumbersome to use so not uitable for snaps.

The advantage is that it will save you many days/months trying to geotag thousands of photos afterwards. And you will have no worry losing the data while travelling.

Bear in mind that many of your photos will be taken indoors so you will have problem with that whether you use a logger or GPS/Camera. A GPS logger may be a better solution on that count.

If you use a Sony DC, you could also consider the Sony GPS logger which comes with necessary software, though as a GPS, it is not the best.
But it is cheap and easy to use.

Thanks for the replies guys.

In terms of getting a new camera with GPS built in, I already have a Canon 350D Digital SLR and don't intend on replacing it just yet. And most of my shots will actually be outdoors type shots as I'm into landscape photography more than anything. But thanks for the ideas though.

Both the Sony and the NaviGPS look promising, I'll have to look into them a bit more.

cheers
Casey
