|
|
Hi everyone. This is my first post as I'm brand new to all of this. I've only just got my head round downloading updated Custom POI's, but what I'd like to know is this:
My Garmin i3 is an old one with a micro SD card. Are the pre-installed POI's on that card, or are they in the unit itself?
If I try to use the i3 without a card it's not having any of it, and instructs me to replace the card. That tells me that the pre-installed info is on the card and not in the unit. But if that is the case then why do the pre-installed POI's not get deleted with an update of custom POI's?
If I search for a mechanic, for example, will the i3 display pre-installed AND custom POI's, or do I have to do two searches if I want to find all of them?
Thanks for your help, anyone... |

the preinstalled pois are a part of the map data - ie update maps = update pois.
custom pois always show as a separate category and as such need to be searched separately.
hope that helps

I have a new i3 with built-in maps which comes with an empty slot which will accept and read a Micro SD card.
I want to put extra POIs onto a new Micro SD card, as these newer machines have limited built-in memory.
However, on older machines, the custom POIs are installed in a file with the extension .gpi.
How can I convert my .csv files into .gpi files to copy onto a new Micro SD card for the new machine? |

Use POILoader to install the POI files, put the csv files into a single folder on the PC, point POILoader at the folder and install the POI files direct to the memory card (you will need a card reader for this) - Mike |

Thanks. Is there a limit to the number of a) files or b) POIs that the i3 can read from the Micro SD card on the versions which have the maps built into the machine rather than the card? |

The i3 is limited to 85 custom POI categories, do not put more than this figure on the card as it will stop the your i3 from starting up.
Each custom category can contain thousands of individual locations, use the POI downloads page and "Combine subcategories into category file" option to reduce the number of categories.
For example, for Petrol stations I am not bothered what type of fuel, just that it is available from a location, the same applies to ATM's - I only need to know where to draw cash out - which bank is irrelevant - Mike |
