I would like to know if it's possible and if so what formats are required?
I would like to create alerts for POI's and maybe even voices.

Grahame Lucas has done an excellent guide to creating your own navigation voices. Find it HERE.

POI alert voices are even easier:- just record whatever you want, save in ogg format as detailed above and give it exactly the same name as the POI's .ov2 file. More details in the first post of THIS topic.
A good free sound editor that can export to .ogg format is Audacity.
