Activating Maps

Am I correct in thinking that once activated a map is only usable on the hardware it was cactivated on. I got a TomTom One after Christmas from Halfords, not for use by me, and was so impressed that I got Navigator 6 for my Navman PPC. After two weeks the "One" failed with the red cross over the picture of the SD card, which indicates a faulty card, but it started working after a few hours. It failed again after about two weeks with the same problem but never recovered so it was returned to Halfords.

At the time I assumed that Halfords just replaced the SD card with a known working one, as it was not me that returned it. However since then I have found out more about TomTom and map activation and have just got to thinking that they should not be able to just swap the card. So did they replace the whole system or is the shop likley to have the ability re activate a map or is it that original maps as supplied in TomTom hardware dont need registering.

Map activation is stored in the hardware on some internal flash memory i believe, so as long as the replacement SD card contained the same map data as the previous one, it should still work. Its just the same as upgrading the SD card to a bigger one, as long as the map is the same version it wont need activating.
