Please advice:
What essential software do I have to download for the iPaq 2210?
What about: backup software, explorer, antivirus, regedit etc?
What are you fellows using?
Regards
John

t's me again ;-)

I would recommend PHM Regedit, Resco File explorer (not free but good) and a good GPS diagnostics program like VisualGPS. That's about all you need to get any GPS program or receiver rolling...

I'd consider Sprite Backup (which is a more fully featured version of the iPAQ Backup built into your machine, which was developed by Sprite) - you can have the Premium Edition for US$10 (plus VAT) if you follow the iPAQ users instructions at http://www.spritesoftware.com.

I'd join Lutz in his recommendation of Resco Explorer 2003. I use the registry editor included in that package, I think it's better than the free PHM one.

Antivirus - there's no known viruses for the Pocket PC at this time. Don't let anyone part you with any money on that score.

You may decide you want a utility program that allows you to defragment storage cards and the like - I have been using Softwinter's StorageTools, though more recently I've been using Anton Tomov's Pocket Mechanic.

Beyond that - it's really a question of what you want to use the Pocket PC for. I've got literally hundreds of pounds worth of software and e-books on mine, but that lot was bought to suit my needs.

A few more fairly general recommendations.

smart GSM is nice if you have a compatible Bluetooth mobile (use the trial version first to check). It works wonderfully with my Nokia 6310i.

Omega One's Battery Pack 2004 may be worth considering - these days I use PocketMon (from Sprite Backup Premium Edition) for monitoring batteries and the like, though I do use the Program Bar from this bundle. It's a little invasive at install, turning on all manner of options such as repeating alarms and its own X button which I'd really rather it kept disabled. It seems also as if recent versions have added features but solved existing bugs. If it wasn't for the still useful Program Bar, and that, unlike Spb's Pocket Plus, the repeating alarms feature respects whether the speaker is muted or not, this would be off my machine. (I found I had to configure the repeating alarms feature with a registry editor, as settings made in the user interface wouldn't persist - how horrid).

For repeating alarms and what I regard as better handling of the X button (you can configure it to close, rather than minimise, applications), take a look at Spb's Pocket Plus.

If you use GPRS from your Pocket PC and want to keep an eye on your usage, try Spb's GPRS monitor.

My all-time favourite program, though, has to be Fitaly. If you're going to do any significant text input with a stylus, this is well worth checking out. 30 wpm can be achieved with practice - faster is certainly possible.
