saving tracks observation/question

I've noticed that when I move my Tracks from the GPS to the PC, only the Active Track saves a timestamp and elevation of each track point. I was bummed about this, since I had a dozen saved tracks for which the elevation data was of interest.

Then, by accident I discovered that the tracks automatically saved to the data card do have this information (luckily I had "log tracks to data card" turned on). However, I'm still confused as to when track data is written to the card. If I clear an Active Track, does it log it to the card first, before clearing? The files are sorted by day, with individual ACtive Logs inside each gpx file. Does the unit append to the current day file during the day, or only after midnight? Does anyone know how this process works?
