Sorry if this is a silly question - and I can't see why this shouldn't be the case - but can I use my GPS device (iPaq & TomTom 5) to see how far across the channel I am on a ferry trip?

I presume that plotting a route in order to get an ETA wouldn't work unless the software knows the actual route, but nevertheless I presume I could check my position on the map and see how far across I am.

Thanks,

Mike

I have a near complete track of my Ferry journey from Fishguard to Rosslare. You need a window seat or be on deck. I lost the track when I visited the 'Heads'. The track is very interesting as the ferry approached Rosslare, with the set channel and the wait for the outgoing ferry.

The Garmin software predicts the arrival times for the crossings at most ports and EuroTunnel! It does not allow for Customs etc :D :D

That's interesting. I didn't know about tracking routes! I don't think I can record a route in TomTom.

You can with a little help from some clever people. Luckily, there's one such person here.

Hi Durotriges,

I imagine that would be a very interesting way to pass the time on a ferry. I will always remember one treacherous ferry journey that Privateer and I took from Guernsey to Weymouth which took nearly 3 hours.

The weather was so bad at one point that the Captain had to just switch the engines off and let the ferry drift for a while! It was one of these fast-cat things that are really only suitable for mill-pond conditions and it had a TV screen on the wall which showed (very vaguely) your route and how far along it you were.

I remember keeping my eyes firmly fixed to this screen, praying for the little boat to move nearer to land, and everyone cheering and clapping when it finally did get there!

It would have been nice to know exactly how long was left on the journey and I imagine that if you got this working you would be one of the most popular people on the boat and would be inundated with people asking, "Are we there yet?" if you made it public knowledge! ;-)

Enjoy your trip, hope I haven't put you off... Laughing

Regards,

Bo Peep.

Bo Peep, that sounds like a nice relaxed trip then! Laughing I love the trip from Weymouth to the Channel Islands, but I haven't been down there in really rough weather - yet!

Alix766, Those trackers are really handy. I read somewhere that a lorry driver was questioned by his transport manager as to why he was recently doing 15mph (or similar) for several hours. He got himself out of trouble by explaining where he was at the time: on the Isle of Man ferry!

What part of Garmin software is this?
Am i missing something on the Sat Nav?
The tracker software site look interesting, but is only suitable for TomTom.

Tim, isn't this PND only? The OP has a PDA/PPC.

Oops, my mistake. Yes, it's for TomTom PNDs only.
