Ok, I've downloaded my first batch of POI's

As I understand it, I now merely drag and drop the .ov2 & .bmp into the relevant folder.

Is there anyway to read the 0v2 files? - ok I assume they will be merely as list of co-ordinates, but can I view them, and if so how?

There are several utilities to do what you want.
I use POI Edit (http://www.poiedit.com/). It's free and it even links in with MapQuest, Streetmap.co.uk and MapPoint, so you can just click on an entry and it shows you it on a map.
