I wanted to hardwire my tomtom directly to the fusebox on my car (Skoda Octavia) without having to rely on using a cigarette lighter adapter. I also wanted to use a cable with a 90° usb plug, so that the tomtom could be mounted lower (without having to leave clearance for the straight plug). I know the included tomtom charger is also at a right angle, but it still sticks out too far!

I spent ages searching for the 'right' cable. I even looked at mobile phone versions with usb plugs. Eventually discovered the Garmin charger cable, which was perfect.

I dis-assembled the cigarette lighter plug and enclosed it's mini circuit board into an N80BQ miniture plastic enclosure. The enclosure was longer than I would have liked (80mm), but the shorter ones weren't quite wide enough (35mm) - I needed 40mm wide.

I was able to modify the miniture enclosure, so that I could still see the led. I did't have to resolder anything apart from the new 12v cable (red/black).

Here are some pics of the finished product, and mounted in the car.

A very neat job!
I'm not bothered about hard wiring, but do I take it that the Garmin charger cable works in the TomTom One without modification? The cable supplied by TomTom seems to be designed for LHD cars, and comes out in the wrong direction

very neat job mate, but its much simpler to stick the charger into an extension socket lead and hard wire that.....

Yeah, I know, but I'm a devil for doing things the long way round. I don't like compromises and it's very satisfying to end up with something that looks like it's been manufactured.

The Garmin cable is 100% compatible with the Tomtom. Like the original supplied cable, this one has a mini circuit which lowers the voltage to 5 volts.
