My brother's i3 has been taking a long time to get a sattelite fix.

I have an i3 as well, so I put mine (batteries) & his (12v cig lighter cable) (both on v3.20 firmware) into my car.

My unit got a fix after a minute, but his took 5 - 10 minutes.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to rectify this, or will a reset work. Alternatively should I send it back to Garmin?

Where are you doijng this?

In the car? If so, what make and model? Are you stationary or moving when you try? Moving delays the lock on time. If you have a Anthermic windscreen this will block your signal too.

Indoors - probably won't work.

Outdoors - move away from tall buildings etc

For comparison purposes, you must make sure that both units have been 'off' for the same time. Get a satellite lock on both units, then power off. Leave for (say) overnight, then switch both on under the same conditions. Mine gets a lock in about 30 seconds under these conditions. One thing that seems to cause a longer time to lock is if the unit is moved whilst off - it might ask if its been moved hundreds of kilometres when you've moved it just a couple of miles! It will then take a bit longer, but, in my case, only a couple of minutes.

Dont know if it makes any difference but since leaving the batteries in the unit I find that it locks on a lot quicker than without them. I use the batteries just for this reason use the cig adapter all the time.

I use rechargeables, and I used to replace them with alkalines whilst charging, in case there was some kind of semi-volatile memory that needed a voltage to keep going. However, after a little experimentation, I've decided it makes no difference, I just take the batteries out, charge them, and put them back. They are quick charge ones, though, only take about an hour.

Basically You need to keep the batteries in because without them it loses the satellite info, once it has this info it will then work out where you are.

All I can say is that my unit takes nowhere near the 12.5 minutes quoted on the above website to get a fix after whipping out the batteries for a couple of hours, the implication being that it's not doing a full cold start under these circumstances. The only times it's taken anything like this period is when I first got the unit, and if I roll-back or roll-forward the firmware.
