Hello to everyone on PocketGPS World - this site is a new discovery for me .. and a welcome discovery at that!!

I recently purchased a Dell Axim x5 with TomTom Navigator 2 and serial GPS (Rikaline GPS-6010). It all came pre-installed, with checkPOInt on it.

Apart from a couple of incidents where the machine slows down or doesn't fire up TomTom, and a couple of problems getting the GPS to get the current location at all ... its been fine, and is working very well. A lovely piece of kit, and i'm well impressed!

However, i've been slightly less impressed with the "notifications" from checkPOInt. Clearly the capability is there, the detection of approaching POI is good. I feel though that the integration to TomTom is a bit weak, and the only visual notification is a coloured vertical progress bar.

The first times I saw this, I really didn't know what I was expecting, nor did I know which POI was triggering it, was it a speed camera? who knows.

Now that i've discovered PocketGPS World, I've learned of other addons, that provide similar functionality to checkPOInt, so its to that end that i'm writing this message....

Given my current set-up, what would others recommend? I've got no qualms about purchasing software if needed, though where possible i'd prefer not to spend money!! Laughing Out Loud

I also find it a bit disappointing that checkPOInt didn't come with any pre-installed .wav files!!

So any advise, would be more than welcome!!

Brian

CheckPOInt gets my vote Thumbs Up It's a superb app and don't forget that it's free (as is our Safety camera database) so the author deserves considerable credit for producing, supporting and releasing improved versions with no charge! What version do you have as v3.2 is the current and best with a nice pop up box that indicates the POI and the direction and distance to it in a pop up window as you approach?

As for notifications, you are right that no .wav files come with the app but it's a simple process to add your own, to get you started I have a zip file of the two voice .wav files I use which can be downloaded here.

Darren thanks for the reply,
Please don't get me wrong - I think that any software author who develops software and releases it free should be commended. Thumbs Up I write software for a living, so I know what is involved in producing any piece of software - and my comments were definately not related to quality, but I guess more to do with functionality.

That said, the version I have installed is 2.0.2, and checking the review on this website, I had noted the new version, but was a little concerned by this comment within the review:

Quote:
"There is a newer version available which is kept up to date, but it utilise's a different sync source and many regular Pocket GPS Readers have found this to cause problems and have subsequently uninstalled version 3 or above and re-installed v2.0.2."

If you are telling my that v3.2 works, and can be updated fine, then yes, I guess i'd be with you on sticking with checkPOInt.

The initial problems have all been ironed out now and I'm happy to recommend it. You do not have to use the POI-Sync option unless you wish to, I use it with our own database and it works very well :D

If you don't have 3.2 then it's worth while getting, take a look at the review (last two screenshots) and you should see what 3.2 looks like on screen.

GPSAssist doesn't work that well under WM2003, POI-Warner is another alternative, or TrafCam but it doesn't use our database, and it is a subscription based database.
