Hi all,
Over on the side there is a conversation about how long it takes for the initial download of Traffic Information to come through when you turn your GO on first thing.

A couple of have reported nearly five minutes and wondered if this was normal Question
Not really had any responses yet to the contrary, so I thought I'd throw it open on here...

Here's my findings from today:

End of 1st minute
Downloaded 39.73kb and uploaded 4.99kb of information. TomTom is still updating.

End of minute Two
Tom Tom seems to still be updating (arrow going over the top of the car) but data amounts have not changed.

End of minute Three
Tom Tom seems to still be updating (arrow going over the top of the car) but data amounts have not changed.

End of minute Four
Tom Tom seems to still be updating (arrow going over the top of the car) but data amounts have not changed.

End of minute Five
Didn't catch the exact point it stopped during the 5th minute, but data amounts have changed to 40.53kb downloaded and 5.55kb uploaded, and TTT is up to date.

Anyone else care to try it for us to see the comparison?

My first update is approx 30 - 40 seconds. It seems to work fine on this shorter time.

Are you moving while carrying out the update? This can sometimes affect GPRS connection speed.

Also, if your moving then you may "handover" to another cell site that is currently full with voice/GPRS calls and so you wont be able to get on that site until someone hangs up. As far as I am aware, operators allocate a certain percentage of a cell sites capacity to GPRS, if this is full the next GPRS call will have to wait.

Do you think this could be happening?

My update test was carried out from my study window.

Full service on the phone and 5 satekites fixed, so I don't think thats a factor? But I could be wrong....

Cheers

Doesnt matter how many satelites are fixed, was concerned at the GPRS connection rather than GPS.

It still oculd be something to do with your network provider. Next time your out of the area (maybe 10 miles away if in a rural area, 4 mile if in a city) test it again so that you get the initial GPRS connection from a differet cell-site.

Try different times of the day that wont be busy on the cell site (rush hour traffic times tend to be busy for cell sites, as would school/college break times etc) and see if it gets through quicker.

Use your phone for a few minutes/sites using the Wap via GPRS service and see how quick things show on the screen, maybe compare to another phone/network. You could try this away from home too, to see if its quicker on another cell site.

Could well be a network setting. They will allocate a certain % of a cell site to GPRS and like I say, if this is all ready taken you will have to wait. The network may adjust this setting to minimise GPRS in an area due to an excess of voice calls until they can get round to expanding that site.

Have not checked size of transfers but initial set up for me takes about 5 to 6 minutes - after that seconds
