I want a system where i can plan out a day's touring in my car and have it navigate me around so that I dont have to keep checking the map, or worse, rely on my wife to do it for me 8O

Therefore, will the Nuvis let me pre-plan routes with many waypoints and save them for future reference ? i.e. so I can plan the next day or so's traveling ? If so is what limits are there on the number of waypoints and/or routes which can be saved ?

Ask Garmin for a map CD and the Mapsource program, although it doesn't come with the Nüvi I am told that they will send you one if you ask nicely.

Using Mapsource on your PC, you can view maps, add/modify/delete waypoints, view tracklogs of where you have been and plan multiple complex routes which you can upload onto your GPS.

(I'm not 100% sure that you can do this on the Nüvi but I presume Mapsource will work in a similar manner to the Quest and other GPS units which can be used with Mapsource. Can anyone confirm this?)

The Nuvi doesn't permit route planning with more than 1 via point. This lack is the main reason that I didn't buy one. There are ways around it e.g. you can save each waypoint as a favourite as numbers and then navigate to each one in turn. This would mean that at each destination you would have to navigate to the next point which is not my cup of tea.

Unfortunately, it doesn't come with the maps you need and I don't think you can get them off your GPS either.

As stated above, the Nuvi will only allow the insertion of a single via point for any journey, which I also found to be a complete nuisance.

The way I get around it is to use MS Autoroute to plan my journey, with as many waypoints as necessary to force the software to take the route I want to travel. I then use a nifty little program advertised elsewhere on this forum that will convert your Autoroute .axe file to a .csv file, which you can then save to your POI file and download to your Nuvi.

I usually name the file (Route) - the inclusion of the brackets means that when you look in your Custom POI on your Nuvi, they will appear at the top of the list. All that is then required is to navigate to each waypoint in turn.

It's not ideal, but it's the easiest way I have found so far that allows me to navigate a route I have selected rather than relying on the Nuvi's choice of route.

Thanks everyone. Although it looks like it can be done its not straightforward so I think the Nivu isnt for me, which is a shame because its a nice little unit.
