Compare ash10 and Cbrom tools

I've lost track of what each program can do, can you please give a comparison of what each of them do, or don't do, which speed camera file has what effect etc. Thanks.

My application allows you to set separate approach and overspeed warnings for speed cameras, plus it saves you from having to unzip and copy files everywhere.

Approach warning:

- Happens regardless of speed
- Single "bong bong" audio alert
- Camera icon/location displayed on screen
- Camera type, database reference number, and posted speed limit displayed in red banner

Overspeed warning:

- Only if exceeding posted speed limit
- Repeating "bing bing" audio alert
- Camera icon/location displayed on screen
- Posted speed limit displayed in red banner

Both of these can be specified independantly for each of the speed camera types, or disabled altogether.

For example, for mobile cameras you would probably want more warning (due to their longer detection range) than for a fixed Gatso camera.

Similarly, you may wish to disable the overspeed warning for redlight cameras, but keep the approach warning.

Warning time vs. distance

Warnings are given when you are a specified time away from a speed camera, rather than a specified distance.

This means that you get a consistant amount of warning, regardless of the posted speed limit.

Clean application

The application itself has no installer, and it doesn't create any extra files or directories. To uninstall it, simply delete the file.

I'm a firm believer in simple "clean" applications like this.

In use

Once you've set the warnings as you'd like them, just drag the downloaded camera database zipfile to the application - there's no need to unzip the files first.

The processed camera database is automatically saved into POI Loader's working directory - next time you connect your GPS unit and use POI Loader, it will be downloaded automatically with whatever other POIs you may have.

In a nutshell

- Set the warnings as you'd like them (they're remembered for future use)
- Drag the downloaded speed camera database zipfile to the application
- Connect your GPS unit to the USB (POI Loader should start automatically)
- Check that POI Loader is set to Feet/MPH and Express Mode (which it should be already)
- Click Next button in POI Loader, and wait for download to complete
- Job done 8)

point to add: ash10's changes the icons that show up on the garmin unit...
(sorry, it's my only gripe about the software!)

i personally prefer cbrom's, simply because i like the original PGPSW bmp's - have used both though and both do essentially the same thing.

have a play and see which you prefer.

I prefer the original bitmaps too but I can't get Cbrom's icons to stay 'always on' even if I tick the always on in the drop down box.
I only get a warning if I'm within 5mph of the camera speed.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or is that the way it's supposed to be?

it could be that we need to use the 'poi loader' files as opposed to speed-zoned? dunno - have mentioned it to cbrom but he says he's v.busy but will take a look when he gets chance.

i think my previous problem with cbroms was that i had used it with the speed zoned files which obviously have the number in the name of the file. auto mode then attempted to set all the proximities up for me and messed it all up!

Hi MaFt.
After reading your post my problems are solved (almost).
I have now used the poi loader files and cbrom's software and all is now working. Although the camera icons still disappear if you stop near a camera, but reappear as soon as you start moving again.
I was going wrong by using the speed zoned files because I preferred the icons with the speed limit signs in them (TT have got a lot to answer for) therefore I would have needed to load all the different files with icons.
When I did this I found the icons only appeared if you were within 5 mph of the camera speed.

It's now a lot better. :D
