I am thinking of purchasing Tom Tom 5 Navigator software to install in my iPAQ 5555. A good selling point would be its ability to plot a route to a given Lat/Lon reference which is accessible by public, though minor, roads in the Brecon Beacons. These points would be meeting points for the starts of walks in the mountains.

I ask particularly because, although I know that Tom Tom 5 has the ability to plot to Lat/Lon, last year I had to call the AA for a friend who was here and I gave a 12 character OS Grid Reference and full degrees, minutes, seconds reference to my farm, only to have the patrolman call me on the telephone 45 minutes later to ask where I was. On reminding him that I had given the full GPS position, he said, “Yes, but my ( AA ) Sat-Nav system doesn’t take me beyond the village ( some four and a half miles away ).

Does anyone know and have experience of using it in a rural setting? Advice would be much appreciated.

TomTom doesn't have an input for lat/lon although it does have an output.
There are various workarounds you can use to input it but these involve editing text files outside of the application.

It's thought TomTom6 might have this feature.

A grid ref is only viable as a destination if it on a road in the software database so if a country car park is not on a road map I don't think it will take you there.

Well it does have this feature on the Go-x10 series running TomTom version 6, couldn't comment on any PDA version though as I haven't seen it.
I have just tried inputting N53deg 55.389 W2deg 43.886 (this location is a few hundred yards away from any road) the unit accepts this and calculates a route to the end of the nearest road, then points you in the direction of your location - Mike

There is no version 6 on PDA's yet. It should be released any time now, tho.

Hi
My free OS GPS Convertor utility will let you do just that - input any position as a lat/long or an OS grid ref, then output it to a POI or itinerary for instant use in TomTom. It's here:

TomTom will take you to the nearest point to this position on a road on its map.

Thank you all very much.

I shall give it a try, thoughh I think that I will wait a while to see what Version 6 can do in other ways over Version 5.
