I have just bought an ipaq 3715. After a week I dropped it once (whilst in its case) off a bedside table - 2ft high max - which resulted in a completely smashed screen unable to display anything.
I was initially told by the store that screen breaks weren't covered by warranty, but after bending the truth and saying it was like that out of the sealed box I got a replacement.

Has anyone any experience of such problems, or have I been very unlucky. My old Palm has been dropped countless times without any problems.

I'm now very concerned about the durability of the product. In my mind it is a portable device and should be able to withstand a certain amount of knocks and drops i.e. be fit for purpose as defined in the sales of goods act. I certainly dont want to be scared to take it out of the house, otherwise it defeats the object of having it.

To start with you was very lucky to get a replacement, but at the end of the day they where not designed to be dropped on the floor, they are just as easily damaged as are cameras, laptops and other expensive portable devices.
If you are so worried about it being damaged there are padded aluminium cases available for them.

If you google on 'ipaq crack screen' you will find quite a few instances of this happening - in a lot of cases without any noticable impact.
Personnally I've dropped countless mobile phones etc without ever having any problems.
My main worry is whether I can even carry this in a bag given some of the stories I'm reading on the web.

I will investigate a case, but I want to use this for GPS so does anyone know a decent padded/aluminium case that will not stop the PDA from being placed in a car cradle?

Thanks
