what is recommended as a starter?

Sorry folks this probably been asked and answered a million times.help what do i need?

Recently took up walking and map reading ain`t too hot yet so considering a Garmin.Got caught out by weather once and was lucky,understand these mark waypoints so as i can backtrack if in trouble?.
Also have been given a copy of memory map and understand sections of map can be downloaded as a help,what do you recommend? wil internal memory be enough,bearing in mind i tight,just lost me job and don`t want to go over the top incase the novelty wears off?

I would seriously recommend you get familiar to using a good map and a thorough grounding in basic navigational skills. A GPS is no substitute for these skills.

If you really want to use a GPS then I would recommend a basic no-frills model. A GARMIN Geko would be ideal for this sort of use - try ebay- you may get one cheaper than new price. You don't really need mapping on a GPS - use proper maps (e.g. in UK use OS 1:25000) and use the GPS to confirm your position. Plot your route beforehand and always have one or two escape routes planned. I have owned GPSes for many years and used them for walking, cycling and in-car navigation.

Other than that invest in good outdoor clothing and a survival bag/blanket - just in case you are not so lucky next time.

Sound advice Phil, the GPS is no substitute for a map, compass and the ability to use these basic tools. Memory Map is great on the PC for planning walks and printing your route/ map etc. You can also load this data from memory map to the GPS device, or as I do load it to a PDA. Reliance upon the GPS alone is both stupid and dangerous if the battery packs up or the device packs up you need the old method of doing things to work. Having said that when the GPS system works (most of the time its fine) its a great tool. For walking make sure its a waterproof unit or put the device in a waterproof case (Otter Box are worth a look at) - Mike
