Hi all, hoping someone can help. I have an original TTGO but with the upgraded GB Plus maps, including MRE. We're travelling to eastern France in the summer, staying about 30 miles north of Geneva. I expect that we will visit Switzerland as part of the trip.
I'm planning to buy and download the France map, but would be interested to know if it covers any of Switzerland at all, or does it just go blank at the border? The image on the web site implies this is the case, but wanted to check. The France map is €59 but the full Western Europe set is only €119, so not a huge amount more. Alternatively, I could just rely on the MRE maps for Switzerland. TIA.

The France map does stop at the borders. You could get the France map and install the plus map, I know you said you already have GB and MRE but having the France and MRE you won't have to switch maps at the border.

As you say, it's 59 Euros for the France map, if you get the map including Switzerland it's about the same again. Personally I think it's worth getting Full Western Europe.

Thanks very much for that. Do you know if you get the MRE with the downloadable France map?

On the TomTom website it states:

"Detailed regional map of France and Monaco connected to the Western European major road network.
Includes Corsica. Street network coverage: 99%."

On the old version for GB it was separate and you had to switch maps but the latest one is fully integrated (for the GB, at least). Is this the default for France as well?

The Alps map would probably suit you. €39.95 download from TT site and described as:

"Detailed regional map fully covering Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein while covering the Northern part of Italy (until just South of Torino), a Southern strip of Germany (up to the line Heilbronn - Regensburg (or Metz - Brno)), an Eastern strip of France (up to +/- 30 kms west of Grenoble) and a South-Western corner of the Czech Republic (bordered by Brno in the North and Vienna in the East). Missed the "Western Europe" bit in your post.

The €119 is a collection of the separate regions that you can buy and includes France and the Alps. It is not a seamless map of Western Europe!!

To get seamless map you need to buy the €249 map that comes with a 1.5GB SD card. It's plug and go.

I guess I can live with changing the map at a border. So I could buy the France map and use it there then swap back to my GB map with the MRE if in Switzerland. Just need to buy a 1Gb card to fit everything on.

I think I'd rather put €249 towards a new 910 with all the maps pre-installed - but think that the boss will probably have a different POV on that one Crying or Very sad

A year ago we stayed in the Jura to the north of Geneva. The "Classic" GO was difficult to use as the places we were going to were local and not on the Major roads or Plus map. With Switzerland in between the France map would always navigate around the edge.

This was after a trip to the battlefields around the France belgium border, which was also difficult.

So last autumn my wife bought me a 700!! :D

Having said that, we used the same Classic on a trip to Spain and only changed the map to cross into Spain and then back again into France a week later. This sort of use is fine as you will probably know the border crossings (search for "Frontier Crossing" in the PoI list) to navigate to. But in the case of the local trips during the first holiday the border problem was a pain.

I've just checked tomtom site and it says France map connected to MRE, not including. Confused When you buy it you can check to see if it does infact have the France map and a France+ map.

I think a better way to travel from France to Switzerland, if the France map has no MRE, is by switching to GB + MRE just before setting off from France. That way you'll be directed to your destination, on the MRE, via appropriate border point.

I'm not sure about Switzerland but MRE section covers far more roads than I expected. In my travels around France I've never been more than a mile or two from my destinations, even Hamlets, and quite often even closer.

I emailed TomTom in the end to ask them. This was the reply I received:

"The PLUS map of each country will have the major roads also included, so if you purchase the France Plus map then it will contain this data."

So, of course, I have now emailed them back to enquire if the downloadable France map is the 'France Plus' map. They don't half make life complicated. Why can't their web site just be more explicit on this sort of stuff?

Thanks for the advice anyway!!!!

So, the answer from TomTom:

"Yes it is ok for you to buy the downloadable map of France from our Plus services page. This is France Plus major roads of europe."

Looks like the best option for me, based on this information. Thanks to every one who responded.

Glad you got your answer Vorix.

If tomtom changed the wording from 'connected' to the MRE to 'including', there would be no confusion.

Just to round this off - I bought a 1Gb SD card and downloaded the France map from the TT web site. Copied all the GB stuff from my old card across to the new one and installed the France map. All works perfectly - the France map does include MRE so can be used for primary routes in the UK and Switzerland. The temptation to buy a 910 has been resisted for the mean time........but I do like the idea of the TMC receiver.
