I need to get a 12v power cable long enough to run from my 12v outlet in the boot of my Golf Mk IV, through the sills of the car, up the back of the dash and into my Brodit active holder, holding a iPAQ 5450. Does anyone know where I can get such a cable? Needs to be about 6-7 metres for safe install I guess.

Er, silly question but surely you have a 12v socket in the main drivers cell of the car ? Why not just plug in a 4-way extension block with 1m flex and hide it under the drivers or passenger seat ?

No not a silly question Dave, I never thought of that. However, I just wanted to keep my console area totally free of cabling. Besides, there's next to no room under a Golf IV seat. It's base is very close to the car floor panel. If I use your method above I'd still have the plug coming out of the consoles' socket and wires trailing over the side wouldn't I?

Why not just wire another socket to the back of the existing cigarette lighter socket? You may well be able to do this without permanent wiring modifications if you use suitable crimp connectors - though an alternative is to splice the wires in the vehicle's loom.

I'm using a socket that sits behind the dash and has my Brodit mount's power adapter in it on my Zafira. Rather than wiring to the existing cigarette lighter, the power comes from the carphone connector.

Russ, You will still have a plug coming out of the socket, but the cable can just come across the console and be tucked in under the console, so it doesn't look that messy. Failying that if you're brave enough you could do what David suggests.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Do you know, does anyone do the cables in straight form, rather than spiral? Secondly, the cable used..is it just 2 core (POS/NEG)? In the meantime, I'll see if I have a spare slot in my fuse box.

Any two core cable of appropriate rating should do the trick.

If you can get to the fuse box, that would be a very neat solution - but somehow I doubt that you'll be able to make use of a spare way - at least not without major hassle!
