RoyalTek RGM-2000 Sapphire and TomTom 5 -- Help!!

My first GPS software was Kane, and with it they supplied a Royaltek RGM-2000. This connects to my HP iPAQ.

I got fed up with Kane some time ago and bought TomTom 3. I was able to configure it to access the GPS using SiRF at 38400 baud.

I recently upgraded to TomTom 5, and cannot get it to work, on any baud rate on any Com port!!! I notice others have had similar problems in this forum, but the solution of set TomTom to NMEA at 4800 baud does not work for me.

Searching the web I came across WinFast Navigator and installed it. I can confirm that the GPS does work using SiRF at 38400 baud, but I cannot get it to work on NMEA. (Maybe I am doing something wrong here)

Is there any way of getting TomTom 5 to read SiRF, I cannot believe that they have removed this feature, especially as it existed in TomTom 3

Is there any way of getting my RGM-2000 to transmit NMEA.

Interested to see your post. I could have written the identical post. I am using a Compaq 3950 PDA with PocketPC 2002 software. Like you I used Kane (Argos) then TT3 (no Problem) then TT5. The later only gives you the choice of NMEA whereas Kane gives you NMEA and SIRF Protocols. TT5 said it couldn't find GPS device. If I chose "other NMEA device" then set the baud rate to 4800 the small circle in the top right of the screen box flashes but still doesn't find the device. With other settings it doesn't flash. I removed all GPS software(suggested in another forum) from my device then reloaded TT5 but got the same result. I also loaded the 5.10 upgrade with no luck.
So now I have reloaded TT3 and Kane both of which work great at 38400 on Com1. If I choose NMEA in the Kane prog the RoyalTek RGM-2000 is not recognised.
Looking on http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/sapphire.php I found the following spec for the RGM-2000.
"NMEA 2.2 GGA, GSA, GSV and RMC, Baud rate 4800bps". I am not into NMEA but I am wondering if this is the spec (2.2) that TT5 uses? There is also a manual for the 2000 on http://www.royaltek.com/manuals/RGM-2000%20User%20Manual%20V1.4.pdf
I intend to question TomTom as to this problem. Maybe if you also pester them we may get a solution. I will post any delelopments here, or feel free to PM me.

Just read the post currently below this one http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=24122 which gives an apparent solution to the problem although it means running at a slower speed. Having read the article referred to I am still unsure as how to reprogrm the receiver to NMEA. If you crack it can you send me an idiots guide as to the actual reprogramming bit.

hi, i got tom tom 5 working with the NMEA settings as described at the beginning of the post, But, there are no satellites shown when you look at the signal strengh even though it is working. Does winfast resolve this issue?

I took the big step and tried it. It does solve the issue where the satelites are not shown on tom tom 5 even though it still works.

hi,
sorry to drag up an old post but i need a bit of help!

i followed the instructions for winfast navigator and set nmea 4800 on com 1,

instantly i got a signal and tracked about 8 satellites, and got updates of my position etc.

BUT i am still not getting anything on TT5 i reset the gps to "other gps" and selected 4800 on com 1 but no joy.

anyone else have any ideas??

Don't know if this might help but just to cover some points.

I also tried WinFast Nav and no joy. When in WinFast Nav, I had selected Command, selected NMEA and set the baud rate to 4800......ok. But still no joy. Checked again and Then I noticed that in NMEA all other settings are blank. Select default and they are all entered. Have you done this ??? I didn't ....duh!

WinFast now in ok in NMEA mode but still no joy in TT 5. Then found eventhough closing down WinFast and starting TomTom, WinFast was still running in the background....hogging the Sapphire receiver! Switched off and now working fine in TT5.

Apologies if some of this sounds a bit basic but better to try the simple things first !!! I missed them first time round but now I can now navigate my way to the pub quicker !!!

sorry for the late reply but just some info - i tried the steps as suggested above and then went for a drive, after a few mins I could see sats on the gps monitor on TT5 but it kept saying no signal etc, slowly slowly more sats were added and after about 10 - 15 mins I got a proper signal ( in a wide open area btw) and TT5 started to work, but straight away it tried to send me down a very large and well established( about 15 years) one way street!!!!!

but at least the programme is working now - i shall do a route tomorrow that TT3 tried to take me up a set of steps! I suspect it will be exactly the same.

an update - all is working and tomtom gets a signal within 30 secs of being switched on - however I am less than pleased with the maps - they are quite old and have noticed quite a few bugs in the system - eg telling me to turn left on the slip road etc
