...removed from all matters GPS, but can anyone advise on a good WiFi card for a 2210? Any input much appreciated.

There are no good WiFi cards. Or better said, no good drivers. Particularly audio and video streaming (web tv etc) is a challenge for them. Built-in WiFi is performing much better.

One of the not-so-bad cards is the Sandisk - with or without the memory. But since you have a 2210, take the card without memory.

Thanks for that. Streaming audio and video is a tad ambitious for me - just want to be able to download mail & drop in here (of course! Laughing

) from time to time when I'm away, and near a hotspot. (Seem to recall a thread about hotspot POIs). A 2210 is more transportable than a laptop. The Sandisk seems to be the more readily available card - think I'll go for one in due course.

Thanks too for the info on Mapopolis as an alternative to TTN - have read through the forum, 2D doesn't bother me too much, not so sure about the map pricing policy tho'. Nor the limitations on how many contiguous maps can be loaded. May well give it a trial when the "spare" 2210 arrives.

Its handy having the WI-FI, both my devices have integral radios, but I use it a lot. Just be aware that most of the Hot-Spots use a service provider and its not free, but can cost 6 quid for a days access - some are free such as my local pub :D - One manufacturer to have a look at is http://www.socketcom.com/product/WL6004-322.asp I use there products serial, BT etc. and the build qual and support is second to non - Mike

Thanks for the reply. Not overly worried about the cost of the hotspot - not likely to become a mega-user, unless wifi's introduced to trains!

Followed up the Socket link - their WiFi CF seems to be a reasonable alternative to the Sandisk, must compare specs in detail, but build quality and support sure count for a lot. Noticed too that they're still selling MyNavigator/BT (emtec?) bundle - wonder if they've moved on since this site's reviews. Anybody contacted them lately? If not, maybe I'll drop them a mail and find out whether they've addressed the concerns expressed, and whether they've moved - or are intending to move - to SirfStar III.

Just a quick update - went for the Sandisk option (couldn't get one without the 128Mb card). Absolute pain in the **** to install, even worse to uninstall. The secret is NOT to use the supplied CD, but to drop into the Sandisk site and download the most recent drivers. Then it's doddle.

I'm now an expert Exclamation

on uninstalling the software and old drivers (more tricky than it should be), so if there are any other queries about this card on similar kit, I'd be happy to help.

Works like a dream - just what I wanted - thanks for the advice. Now, where are all those free wifi hotspots???

Glad to hear you got there in the end, I have had problems in the past with certain hardware, and your tip to go to the manufacturers site for the latest drivers is spot on, you should do this periodicaly for the devices in your PC as well.
I just upgraded the IPAQ yesterday with a new ROM and another update on top of that (it needed a hard reset so I used the opertunity to upgrade).
As for Free Wi-Fi switch the card on and when it finds a network it should inform you, if its free you should be able to connect, switch it on at a London mainline station and try it, but that will only pop-up O2 openzone (I suspect), which a 6 quid per day is costly. I know of a few free areas (pubs) in Blackpool where it works great, so if you are ever in the area give me a shout - Mike

unfortunately (and fortunately) my pc has built in wifi. Twice it has gone bad and both times best buy has had to give me a brand new laptop (which means i know to back up my data)
