Oddly enough, I have noticed that there's been the odd gripe or two about TTN5 on these forums. I don't doubt that many are justified (tho' I haven't had any probs myself, except for the curious behaviour of the backlighting on my 2210 since moving from TTN3).

If, as some suggest, TTN5 is perhaps a retrograde step, and not what it could/should have been, can anyone suggest a suitable alternative that not only carries out the tasks that TTN3/5 perform, but addresses their oft-quoted shortcomings? Anything new on the horizon? What should the wise man be saving up his cash for?

The only program that is on par with TomTom is Navigon. But that's dreadfully slow.

If you want real performance and a host of unique features try Mapopolis. It saved my lower back during the recent evacuation from hurricane Rita...

Now I'm intrigued. Glad you escaped Rita OK (I was in the Keys when Andrew called by, but I slept through) but how did Mapopolis save your back?

Am working my way through the Mapopolis forums - seem to have been some map issues for us Brits, and some routing issues. Nothing new there, then..... Anything else you're aware of - and do I sense a small bias?

Thanks for the input so far. Might well get to try Mapopolis out.

I had to take backroads, and very quickly find alternative routes when congestions were seen ahead (and there were lots of them). Entering alternative routes via menus is just impossible when you are under stress. Mapopolis has a combined map/navigation view, and you can tap and hold a point on the map and say "Route through here" or "Forget everything, take me here instead" very quickly. No other program can do that.
