I apologise in advance for my naivety, but I’m an Englishman living in Moscow for over 11 years now and hand held computing and Sat Nav is all new to me.

After many years of using public transport and gypsy cabs around this mad city I have finally got behind the wheel of a beautiful Audi 8 Quattro 4.2 litre.

Now my first problem is not hand held related but just out of interest would anyone know who manufactures the GPS system in this vehicle? As the vehicle is 5 years old and originally came to Russia from Austria all the handbooks are in German. The guy that I bought the car from said that when he got it, it had a CD Rom for Western Europe, but Russia was not covered at that time. I was wondering where I might be able to find out if a disc now exists for Moscow at least. This system is visual only and displays in the computerised panel in the dash. Any help or advice where to find the help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly and more in your field; I have been offered a second-hand Yakuma Delta 300 GPS bundled with an in car mounting, Pocket GPS Moscow Pro and ‘cracked’ discs for all of Western Europe.

The guy originally wanted $480 for the lot and I offered him $300. He then came back with a lowest price of $380. I really like the idea of a hand-held that I can take from Russia to the UK and back, I also like the idea of having a mini computer with me, a digital voice recorder with the ability to up-load recordings to a MP-3 disc or similar.

At best I don’t want to pay more than $350 for this second-hand Yakuma. I can buy the Mitac Mio 169 bundled with Pocket GPS Pro for $500 but that is new with a guarantee.

Can anyone advise on whether they think the $380 for the Yakuma is a fair price or where I might better spend my money? The other thing that I’m very keen to have in either the Yakuma or any other hand-held portable you recommend is the ability to have all of the UK and especially the location of all GATSO and other crap that make my short visits home a misery.

Sorry for such a long introduction post, but I hope that I haven’t bored the pants off you! Cheers

For information on your Audi installation, I suggest you try a specialised Audi message board. I just did a search on "audi" + "message board" and received an encouraging number of hits.

I regularly visit such a board for my car manufacturer and the detailed knowledge available from members is sometimes quite amazing.

It matters not who made the GPS system for the Audi, the map data is almost certainly either Navteq or TeleAtlas.

Navteq

TeleAtlas

I'm aware of PocketGPS Moscow Pro which is very good, what software is the Europe maps version for? To use Safety Camera data you need an application that has good support for custom POIs and can accept data in the common .ov2 or .csv formats.

I realise Moscow is awash with pirate goods but please don't discuss 'cracked' or other pirated software here in future. Also It's no bargain considering it lacks a warranty and original software. I'd look elsewhere.

Thank you for your help and assistance, although I feel that the slap on my wrists over 'non kosha' software a bit stringent when I was only trying to get your expertise and advice on worthiness of the bundle I had been offered. If I had said that it was original software then, it would certainly affect the selling price.

I was in no way advocating or encouraging the misuse of intellectual property rights.

You should be able to get a brand new Mio 168, with local navigation software, for around $350 somewhere.

Having checked out both the Navteq and TeleAtlas links it seems that there are no software updates for Russia.

I can only source a MIO 168 here bundled together with a genuine Moscow Pocket GPS Pro. 2 for $500

We not only have a problem here with 'software' but also with numerous 'gray imports', and I don't yet know the difference so I best do soem reading up!

Cheers, anyway.
