Hi all

I have a very stupid question that I’m sure someone here can answer. Yesterday I found my iPAQ 3970 had flattened its battery (see later!) and had thus lost everything, including Tomtom Navigator 5.

My question is how can I get it back? If I explore the PDA I can see an “empty” folder called “Tomtom” and a normal folder “Great Britain Map”, both on the storage card. Not surprisingly, there is no mention of Tomtom in the “Program files”.

Now, I’ve tried the obvious of connecting the PDA to my computer and running the install Tomtom from the CD, but all I get is options to add maps/active post codes etc. I can’t see anything to do with the actual application. It’s some time ago, but I’m sure when I first installed it, running the CD automatically installed it, then went to the screen for maps etc.

I have read something about only being allowed to install TT twice/wait 6 months (but I’m sure I only needed to do it once, but have run the CD a few times as I added post codes etc). Also, by chance, I bought it 6 months ago so that should have passed as well.

I cannot “uninstall” Tomtom from the PDA because, apparently, it is not there!

Now to the second part of this post…I could turn it into a rant about how unreliable satnav gear is (I had to replace my £250 Socket receiver a few weeks ago after it failed me in the middle of nowhere Evil or Very Mad ) , but I’ll try not to! The reason the battery failed was the PDA had decided to turn itself on. My son had actually spotted it late one night so tried to turn it off. Pressing the off button made everything go very dark, but he could just make out an image on the screen. Nothing he could do would get rid of the image. He then forgot to tell me about this until my troubles last night. Clearly, it was still partly on, draining the battery. So, why does the stupid thing turn itself on, but then won’t let you turn it off!!!! I have seen this behaviour myself, but it is very rare…I think it’s done it about 3 or 4 times over the past couple of years and I do a hard reset, if I spot it in time of course!

Any help, particularly with getting TT back again would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't be a problem to just reinstall from CD. I've done that a few times before, and I haven't had to reactivate it. In fact the "six months" thing is just for activating on other devices so that doesn't apply either.

Make sure you have the correct CD. It looks like you are trying to install from a CD with just the maps on it, rather than the "Application / User Manual" CD.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have time now, but I will check the CD again later, but I'm sure I used the one that says "Application/User manual".

Using the wrong CD would be a suitably stupid thing to do!

Why not go to the TomTom web site and download the latest version, this will install via active sync, it will at least save you the hastle of upgrading, the CD certainly will not contain this version, once you have got it up and running make a back-up and store that on either the SD card or internal memory (if your device has sufficiant of this), in future you can then re-install straight away once the power is restored, even away from the home PC and CD set - Mike

Hi there Skeletel
I know that this note will not help you in your predicament but it may help you in the future.
When you do get Tomtom running again install the backup program ‘Sprite Backup,’ it’s a must. Should anything then go wrong in the future you will be able to ‘restore’ and Tomtom will be up and running perfectly. I too have lost everything in the past but thanks to Sprite I didn’t have a care in the world.

Thanks guys. I have had more time to look at this (rather than the panic late last night) and I discovered I HAD put the wrong CD in doh!!!

But, I thought I was still barmy when just trying things because I swapped CDs around, pressed the CD icon, and got the previous CD’s menu up! The reason is that I always click a cross to exit an application…I forgot that TT wants you to click in the “Quit” radio button…another doh!

But mikealder, this stupidity did lead me to your suggestion of a new version that I did indeed download, and it did load onto the PDA in spite of the previous version still not being on there (I used my original CDs to sort out post codes and Jane’s voice). I did not need to enter any product code either, but I don’t really understand why (but I’m not complaining).

I don’t really understand what you mean by making a backup. Do you mean simply to copy the Tomtom folder to the SD card? The folder that has things like CurrentMap.dat and data05.chk?

Doing something like this in Windows would not work as you aren’t “installing” the software (i.e. writing the registry). I don’t do much at all in Windows CE…I only really use the PDA for Tomtom, so sorry for being dumb.

If I lost power again, this kind of backup would not produce the Tomtom icon for example.

Finally, I know I had dreadful difficulty in getting it to see my Inter-active GPS receiver…and I am again. I have successfully paired via Bluetooth, but Tomtom is not seeing it. I used to use “Other cable device” but this new version does not have this. I tried “Other NMEA GPS” and this let me set the baud rate to 9600 (also tried 4800). I used to use Bluetooth Serial port 8. But nothing works. Any ideas.

Thanks again.

In 5,2 use "other Bluetooth device" make sure you have opened up the bluetooth and subscribed to the SPP mode prior to this - once this is done tomtom should fire up and use the BT GPS, as for registering, you had allready done this for the device so it shouldn't ask you again. A back up utillity on the PDA is a must, Sprite is one of many, but probably the best, it will re-load all the software onto the PDA if you suffer a power outage, even when remote - if not this application I would recomend at least some form of back up - Mike

No, I still can’t make it work (why is it so difficult!!)

This is what I have done:

Bluetooth manager:
Click on BT GPS;
Actions: Bond device;
Connect to SPP slave;
OK: and I see the yellow question mark has a blue circle with up and down arrows;
Click X out of Bluetooth manager;

Start Tomtom;
Says “No GPS device”
Go to GPS status;
Configure and chose “Other Bluetooth device”;
It says “Please pair etc” (Which is what I assume I’ve just done);
Chose “Bluetooth Com port 8”

Nothing.
Restart Tomtom: nothing.

What is wrong??

Thanks for your help…I can never get these stupid things to work!

This “sprite” utility…will a Google find me this? And do I just install and run it on the PDA? Sorry, as I say, I have zero knowledge of PDAs…other than to consider them unreliable!!

Update: I’ve been trying everything. I did everything as in my previous post, but then did a hard reset (I’m always having to do those normally so I thought I’d give it a go!). I then tried the “Other NMEA GPS” again.

Amazing…it’s sprung into life!

Not a bad three hours work!

I don’t really know what I’m doing so any comments gratefully received.

I think my best bet is to hire a chauffeur and let them worry about getting places!

Thanks again

The "other NMEA" set up is notorious - you only took 3 hours - it took me 3 days.

Its not you that doesn't know what you are doing - its Tom Tom for having such a misleading way to connect to a bluetooth device (pretend its wired)

Hi Skeletel
Glad you have things running again. I see you quoted ‘I don’t really understand what you mean by making a backup’. Well, Sprite Backup is a programme that backs up your complete PDA programmes and settings. After running the Sprite program and backing up you are safe and sound. Should you then ever again have to do a hard reset you just connect to your computer and click on restore. Everything is restored, even your icons and Bluetooth settings. But even better is the fact that you can backup to a folder called ‘Ipaq File Store’ on your PDA. The File Store folder is not affected by a hard reset so you can restore without connecting to your computer. A life saver if you are away on holiday in France and your PDA does a hard reset. It works, I’ve done it.

Trevor1234, I’ve found the Sprite software and will certainly think about getting it. Reading one of the adverts, They say I may even have it as my PDA is iPAQ, although I guess it could be too old (also shows how little I am into PDAs!). I’ve not looked at my PDA today…I wonder if it is still working!

The gremlins are not giving up though, I didn’t notice straight away but the first hit on the search was to a dodgy site that sent me 2 viruses as soon as its site appeared…luckily I’m very well protected. Totally off topic, but anyone, if you’ve not got anti-virus software…get some now!

Thanks for your help all.

Try handango.com its not very expensive considering what it is capable of - well worth the outlay the first time you need to depend on it, power fail/ total resets never happen at the correct time - at home etc. - Mike

The reason for the screen going dim is probably that you pressed the power key and held it. This is a power saving feature on the iPaq. A quick press of the power button turns it on or off, press and hold and it dims the screen/brightens it.
