If you buy a GO 300 you get full UK maps, but no European maps.

You can then buy "door-to-door" country-specific maps, such as France, Germany, etc. or else the "Major roads of Western Europe" maps.

What is the difference in the level of detail? Is the W.Europe set useless for navigating within cities, say Lille, Marseille, Munich etc. ?

They will get you though the major cities ok and will get you "near" to where you want to go but if the destiation is on a street youve had it.

I found the MRoE was fine for travaeling across france from the South right up to the North

You have several options, but the Major Roads of Europe map on its own is not one of them. This was only supplied on the CD that came with the Classic.

The 300 comes with you own country. If you want to travel in another European country you have to buy an SD card for that country. The map on the SD card will be the "plus" map of the country - the country in detail with the major roads of the rest of Western Europe attached to it as one map. Some of the "countries" are actually more than one - i.e. "Iberia" has Spain and Portugal on it as one detailed map.

The detail for the country named on the card will be fully detailed to street level. That is it will have the same level of detail for (say) France as you have on the GB map in your 300 at the moment.

The alternative that you have is to buy the 6CD set of maps of Western Europe. This will allow you to download any or all of the country maps to a new blank SD card. The CD maps come with a map of each country on its own (like the GB one you have) and also a "plus" map for each country. Load what you like onto a big enough card and switch maps at the border to keep the detail, or as recommended, work from the plus map of the destination country and use the main roads in the other countries and the detail when you get there.

Thanks sgould, a comprehensive reply.

Now for another question...
Apparently the GB and Netherlands country-specific maps come with "full postcode support".
Do the maps supplied on the TTG 700 include full postcode support for GB?

The GB maps on the TomTom Go 700 do include the full postal code search, just choose 'navigate to' and then 'postcode' - this will allow you to enter a full postcode, if you choose 'navigate to' and then 'address' you will only be able to enter 4/5 digits of a postcode.

Be aware of future upgrade options for your maps as well. I purchased individual region maps for UK and France but I am now locked into a double upgrade for ever or an additional purchase of MOWE. I cannot upgrade at the discounted cost of €49 to the MOWE because I didnt buy this in the first place for what would have been at the time a nominal cost. Worth thinking about.
