I know that it has been touched on before but think it worth repeating.
Yesterday I planned my intended route at home and then went out to my car without turning off the TTG. I drove off but could not get a GPS fix . I cleared the route and switched off. Then turned TTG back on and got a GPS fix almost straight away - then set the route I had earlier planned and had no problems thereafter. For some reason the TTG does not like getting a GPS fix after advanced route planning.

i find sometimes my tomtom go 300 has excellent GPS lock and then some times none at all or it can be verry intermitant.
the way round it for me is to leave the unit a minute or two before setting off....but yeah a bit of a pain in the arse |

also...if your planning the route in the house and then taking your tomtom go out to the car then try switching off and back on again after you have mounted the go, it will not forget the route but will lock on to new satts.
maybee this will help. |

It is very unlikely that anything you might have adjusted in yout TTG does influence the GPS reciption or lock time. This is all done by a dedicated GPS processor that is totally unaware about routes, POIs, voices or whatever.
This piece of silicon does all the satellite reciption, signal detection, data extraction and all the navigational math to produce a steady stream of GPS positions and satellite-status. This data stream is received by the TTG main processor via a serial port in plain ASCII. If the GPS processor (SIRFstarIIe/LP) fails to get a lock, then it's a problem with signal reciption. |

So why does it DEFINITELY lock up quicker if:
a) you let it find lock before you start moving, and
b) when you switch it on it is in the same place where you last switched it off (or in other words it's still where it thinks it is)? |

ad a) If you are moving, you will introduce additional errors into the signal: frequency shifts (Doppler effect), noise and changing signal quality along your way. It makes it harder to "match" the signal pattern to the satellite <--> position constellation.
ad b) You can shorten the calculation if you can assume a known position and check whether the expected signal matches the actual one. If this does not match, the GPS processor must do a full set of analysis.
Once you got a "lock", i.e. the math and the signal match, the processor can calculate the new position more easily by "following the changes" of the signal. |

Thanks for the explanation! (b) is actually quite clever, although now I wish there was an option to TELL my TomTom where it is, to give it a helping hand! :P |
