|
|
There has been some discussion concerning support for EGNOS/WAAS support on SiRF STAR III based systems (Globalsat 338 does not). I just received a copy of the Holux GPSlim236 spec sheet and User's Guide. They both specify that the 236 does support EGNOS/WAAS. Under "Position" it states:
Non DGPS (Differential GPS):
-position: 5 - 25 m CEP without SA
EGNOS/WAAS/Beacon
-position <2.2 m, horizontal 95% of time
<5 m, vertical 95% of time
The User's Guide is dated 031705 |

Have you tried to get a WAAS fix yet? _________________ Lutz

No, I do not have the unit as of this time. I was able to download the spec sheet and User's Manual last night. |

well, then let's prove that theory in real life, right? _________________ Lutz

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) consists of two geostationary satellites (one each over the oceans adjacent to the Americas) that act as pseudo GPS satellites, and that can help compensate the adverse effects of the ionosphere on the signal runtime of the standard satellites. With this correction the receiver can increase the position accuracy to 3 meters (from 25 without WAAS). But the receiver must be capable to receive these (weaker) signals, and it must actually see those two birds (or at least one of them) - not very likely in the northern parts, or in urban area/dense foliage.
For road navigation WAAS is generally not required. 25 meters is good enough.
In Europe the system is called EGNOS, can't remember the name in Asia. _________________ Lutz

New York is actually pretty close to one of the birds so you may get lucky and see one every now and then. But for street navigation in the city it's certainly not required. The multi path feature of SiRF III is way more important in urban canyons. Do you see a lot of position jumps? _________________ Lutz

actually that is another thing bugging me..
What is new with the SIRF III
Haicom 303mmf is sirf IIe I guess.
Does the new sirf star III a noticable improvment.. is it worth the money to go for it? _________________ Tomtom Nav 6.0 USA, Canada & Europe Map

:P thanks.. thats what I was thinking about so you really think I will see the difference in the holux 230 Sirf Star IIe and Holux 236 Sirf Star III?
230 goes for like 85$ on ebay and the 236 is like 170$... _________________ Tomtom Nav 6.0 USA, Canada & Europe Map
