Here's an interesting page where TomTom finally openly admit that they dropped some features and are not planning to get them back in

Quote:

Overwritten Features from NAVIGATOR 3

In order to add the improvements to the NAVIGATOR 5 software the following features of NAVIGATOR 3 have been overwritten:

Permanent Avoids

It is no longer possible to permanently avoid a rectangular area on the map.

However, NAVIGATOR 5 has a range of more sophisticated avoidance features, depending on why you want to avoid an area. For instance, you can demand a different route, or a reroute round a roadblock up ahead, or you can avoid a specific part of the planned route. Using TomTom TRAFFIC (which comes with the free month trial of TomTom PLUS services), you can even ask for a route which minimises traffic delays.

Preferred Speeds

You will no longer be able to set a preferred speed for all roads manually.

However, NAVIGATOR 5 enables you to plan:
Shortest routes
Fastest routes
Routes avoiding motorways
Walking routes
Cycling routes
Routes for vehicles limited to a maximum speed -Routes that avoid toll roads, ferries or congestion charges

Latitude/Longitude Navigation

This feature is no longer available with NAVIGATOR 5.
However, in NAVIGATOR 5 you can now navigate by:
an intersection
a city centre
a point on the map
post code (UK and NL; using complete postcodes only)
Points of Interest

Split View

This feature is no longer available with NAVIGATOR 5, this new design was based on close consultation and feedback from customers.

GPS Log/Route Recording

This feature is no longer available with NAVIGATOR 5, this new design was based on close consultation and feedback from customers.

Rearranging Screen Menu items

The menu structure in NAVIGATOR 5 is fixed. Like many of the above changes, this new design was based on close consultation and feedback from customers.

Why not? They managed to get it in TT3 so why not here?

Yawn. So every time you plan a route that takes you through the area with the huge map error you have to manuall adjust it? Nonsense.

Why not? I would the preferences option just sets preferred speeds anyway! Why not expose it to the user? Or is this some optimisation for the routing?

Again, why not? It's just a point on the map!

That's good. I hope it does motorway junctions as I've been wanting this feature for ages.

a city centre

Hey you could do that anyway!

And that!

post code (UK and NL; using complete postcodes only)

That is very good.

Never used it myself.

Absolute nonsense! Why did they remove this feature! I was planning to make use of this. What utter tossers - pardon my French.

Consultation with their customers? Anyone think they are having a laugh here?

some of these "improvements" can actually be worked around.

Navigation to Lat/Lon : use ITN or POI tweak

Log: use external tools like GPSGate.

Can you expand on 'ITN or POI tweak' please. I am not familiar with these and cannot find a reference to them on this site. I would like to be able to still input long/lat on my PDA without having to use a pc based poi editor.
