Hello...
A taxi driver wanted his GO directly suplied from the 12v from the car and an installer of taxi-equipment do this for him.
And (of course) the GO doesent work anymore.
He put the 12 volt directly into the GO and now the only thing that works is the green LED in the front.
What can be done? _________________ Gunnar Nystul, Forum Admin, TomTom Forum Norway and Nystul Navigasjon |

Slap his hands (twice) and tell him to buy a new GO. The old one is fried. He may sell it on eBay as defective, for spare parts. _________________ Lutz

since it is user error I am pretty sure the repair will be as expensive as a new unit.
You never know what else has died - may be just the power regulator, but may be more. I wouldn't risk that. _________________ Lutz

Well - all the electronics is on just one circiutboard, so I think that the board must be replaced...
All wires etc connected to this, is equipped with connectors for fast replacement. _________________ Gunnar Nystul, Forum Admin, TomTom Forum Norway and Nystul Navigasjon |

Although it is very easy to replace components in a TTG, in your case the processor board will have to be replaced and that's not going to be cheap. |

I think TomTom will dishone the problem very quickly. One they read these forums, and two if you don't tell them that it was wired directly to 12v, they'll be able to quickly tell that far too much current has been sent to the circuit board.
If the GO was installed by a proper installer, he would have first known to check the voltage on the end of the original cable and he would have seen the voltage step down (regulated) and would have then either used a botched up version of the original cable, or created a regulated cable by examing the insides of the original cable.
Either way it doesn't sound like he's a proper installer! Chalk this one up to experience! |

@ Dave:
I did not see your posting before my last posting...
In my mail to TT I have told about that it have been conected to 12 v directly... ( if I want to be criminal; it would be for mutch more money and you will read about it in your local newspaper 8) )
It should be a profesional installer... (taxi-equipment-installer)
I think the owner of the GO will charge him for the cost of this repair etc...
Yes - I will post all about this! _________________ Gunnar Nystul, Forum Admin, TomTom Forum Norway and Nystul Navigasjon |

I have shipped the GO to TomTom...
My experience so far, is that TomTom are realy professional and make it easy for the customer to do this.
This is how they do this step by step:
1: I sendt an question/ explanation of this to TomTom Support
2: I get an answer back with clear and presise instruktions what to do. Exactly what I should put in the box, what I should write on the box (i got an web-page whit adress and ref.number to print out directly and put on the box), a number to call (DHL) and referense-number for DHL.
3: I did this and DHL came stright away and pick up the package.
4: I got an E-mail from TT and they tell me that they have recieved my package.
Thumbs up for TomTom.

Any "proefessional" vehicle equipment fitter should have insurance for events just like this. If an installer damages your car or an accessory then the installer is usually liable for the cost of repairs or replacement.
Unless.... the installer warned that he was not familiar with the equipment and would not be liable for any dameage caused as a result (in writing).
IMHO no "professional" vehicle tech would connect an unknown piece of kit to a car without first checking the voltage, current and polarity specifications. How else would he/she know the correct fuse rating (He did fit an in line fuse I hope !).
The industry has it's fair sharel of self proclaimed "professionals".... I have had dealings with some who I wouldn't let near my car. Sadly these few give the other reputable majority a bad name.
If he doesn't have insurance cover.... he shouldn't be working on peoples cars ! |

UPS came in the door right now with a refurbished TomTom GO.
I'm impressed by TomTom for their proffesional service and handling of this case.
They used only 3 workingdays instead of 5-10 days as they promised.
I sendt the GO by DHL 6. April and recieved it today...
That's exactly 1 week (with transportation from Norway to The Nederlands, handling by TomTom and transportation back to Norway.)
Thumbs up !
The price for the repair: 0,-
The price for shipping: 0,-
The price for taxes: 0,-
I know there will be a happy Taxi-driver in Norway tonight...
(...and he will of course get the latest software and the Norwegian speed-camera database installed...) _________________ Gunnar Nystul, Forum Admin, TomTom Forum Norway and Nystul Navigasjon |
