Question - Hardwiring an IPaq 2210 to Car.

Hi

I am confident with car electrics but just want to check so I do not fry my Ipaq. Afterall it is the Amps that do the damage...

I have stripped down the accessories plug that came with the car mount and it is a straight through 12v connection with +ve and ground. What I am looking to do is wire the cable into the back fo the car's fuse box in the cabin say into the fuse that powers the 12v Accessories plug at the front. Can someone confirm I have my theory correct and I am NOT going to fry my IPAQ or TT mouse Question

I did the same thing when I fitted mine but would suggest that you utilise the fuse that is supplied with the mount to be safer.

If you are going to wire into a permanent live feed, as well as a fuse you would be advised to wire it via a switch. I have mine powered up all the time which is alright if the vehicle is in daily use, but if left for 4 or more days will run the car battery down making starting difficult or impossible. The switch enables me to power off the mount and mouse when parked up for a few days or more.

And just as a word of caution, the iPAQ accepts 5v so your mount must be reducing the 12v to 5v somewhere. Most chargers have this circuitry in the cigarette lighter plug but Brodit, Arkon and others have it in the cradle or in-line in the lead.

Just be 100% sure of this before you connect to 12v and add an additional fuse if possible. Good advice regards a switch if your connection is not ignition switched. However my two are permanently connected and have not caused any probs as without the PDA's in the cradles there is little drain.

Thanks for the tips, I shall certainly incorporate a switch and in-line fuse.

Darren thanks for the word of caution, I have stripped down the power adaptor and there are no PCBs it is a straight through power adaptor into to the Tom Tom cradle which does have PCBs so the step down must be in there.

I'll keep you all posted on how I get on...
