I emailed TOMTOM about two subjects - and had a reply in under two hours - everyone else seems to be concerned about lack of response, so not sure what I am doing to get this service. problem is I didn't understand the reply. My questions related to Portuguese map coverage and Postcodes. On the latter I have read in this forum that the postcode support was poor - I couldn't find ANY in my TTN2 - so asked them the question. Reply posted below - but what is "Streetname postfix"?
Thanks
Guy
Dear Guy,
Thank your for your email
We are working on both issues. For Portugal we are depending on our data
supplier, we hope to offer broader coverage in future releases. For the postal
code, please find an explanation below:
TomTom Navigator allows you to use the postal digits as a short-cut for entering
the city name.
Unfortunately this only works in countries that use purely numerical prefixes
which furthermore uniquely identify particular cities (although the reverse need
not be true, i.e. a particular city does not necessarily have to have a single
code).
Great Britain uses a different, non-numerical postal code system.
Beta testing proved that the 3-character alfanumeric codes available did not
save time compared to typing in the first three letters of a city, and in fact
conflicted with our spelling-correction and "sounds as" technology.
For the Great Britain maps, this "city aliasing" is therefore not supported,
even though some beta versions included it.
Instead, in Great Britain beta testing identified a different need, and here
(only in Great Britain) TomTom Navigator 2 provides the postal "street name
postfix", allowing you to distinguish between same-named streets in different
parts of a city.
Regards,
TomTom Customer Services

What I think they are referring to is use of the first 3 digits of the UK Post Code after a Streetname to aid in identifying the correct one where multiple options exist i.e. High St (GU1), High St (RH2) etc.
Not convincede that it's that useful but I have used it to narrow down a choice on occasion, of course this assumes you know the destination's Post Code! _________________ Darren Griffin |

So does this mean they will not be implementing Post Code only search then?

AFAIK that's correct (atleast at this stage). Who knows what will happen later ? |
